Tearing Down Monuments

If we really want to get rid of all vestiges of racism then...

Democratic Party is a monumental racism

If we're serious about tearing down all reminders and symbols of America's racist past, we should consider ridding ourselves of the biggest monument of all to racism; the Democratic Party. We cannot say things like "that was a long time ago" or the party has since changed. The Democratic Party quite literally created the KKK and imposed the discriminatory Jim Crow laws on black Americans for over 150 years. The Democratic Party has been the most racist and longest racist and most recent racist symbol in American history, yet most people have never been taught that history.

If the purpose of tearing down all the Confederate monuments is to remove all memory and exaltation of a racist symbol of America's past; then the first monument that people should tie a rope around and tear down is the Democratic Party. It is not a "changed" party since in 1924, its national convention was basically a Klan rally. Since in 1964 its president Lyndon Johnson was still calling black Americans "niggers". Since in 2008, a cadre of Democratic politicians lined up to insult Barack Obama by calling him the first "clean" African-American presidential candidate with "no negro dialect" Since in 2016, Hillary Clinton told a group of black Americans that if they wouldn't listen to her then "she'd only talk to white people"-- What's all that supposed to mean?

Whether we like it or not, humans like to be around other humans that look like them, behave like them, think like them. Sure, many of us also like to explore and experience new cultures, but when we're ready to move back to our smaller groups, we seek out people like us...whatever that may entail. Is that racism?

Granted, the issues are more complex in the fact that there really was slavery and oppression in America. But if a person never transcends their heritage then that is the first thing and possibly the only thing people will see. They will not see the human but rather the "black person" or the Hispanic; not because they necessary are making an effort to categorize but because the person they are viewing purposely projects that first and most. It is amazing when people transcend their self-imposed stereotypes and become more than any classification that can be easily seen, such as race, nationality and even gender. I'm NOT saying we should ignore those aspects of who a person is, but to limit ourselves by self-imposed stereotypes is often our own fault.

Instead of classifying our monuments of the past into one perspective, perhaps we should see the individual behind it. Who were these people? Were they really hateful racists? What was the situation at the time? Why is it important to understand who they were and what was going on? Removing an individual from memory, from history only harms us. For instance, most everyone will say Adolph Hitler is an example of vile human behavior yet was Hitler anyone else as an individual? What if we rejected everything about Hitler? Would we have to reject even potential good aspects? What if another person like Hitler began to rise up? Would we notice beforehand or will the purging of history cause us to repeat the error? We must understand the individuals we are being told to lump into one easily dismissed group. Isn't this classification of a person into a stereotyped group the very definition of racism or bigotry?

"The white liberal differs from the white conservative only in one way: the liberal is more deceitful than the conservative. The liberal is more hypocritical than the conservative. Both want power, but the white liberal is the one who has perfected the art of posing as the Negro’s friend and benefactor; and by winning the friendship, allegiance, and support of the Negro, the white liberal is able to use the Negro as a pawn or tool in this political “football game” that is constantly raging between the white liberals and white conservatives.
Politically the American Negro is nothing but a football and the white liberals control this mentally dead ball through tricks of tokenism: false promises of integration and civil rights. In this profitable game of deceiving and exploiting the political politician of the American Negro, those white liberals have the willing cooperation of the Negro civil rights leaders. These “leaders” sell out our people for just a few crumbs of token recognition and token gains. These “leaders” are satisfied with token victories and token progress because they themselves are nothing but token leaders." -- Malcolm X
