Dear World, Forgive Us
Dear world, while I may not be the president of the United States, nor would I go on a tour trashing America even if I was; I do however want to ask your forgiveness. I am not apologizing for the USA's history or for its past confidence and leadership in the world. After all, America is simply a nation made up of the best of all people from every nation and culture of the world. But what I am asking forgiveness is our recent failings. We are failing you. In the past, love us or hate us you could count on America to keep its promise. You could count on us to stand by you when we said we would. You could count on us to stand up for the little guy. You could count on us to advance liberty --- which is different than "democracy".
I understand why you wouldn't want what our politicians are calling "democracy". Even America's own founders despised democracy as one step away from mob rule; mobs controlled and lead not by principled convictions but by thugs and tyrants that pretend to give freedom. I understand why you oppose our exportation of the most debase aspects of mob rule; which is sexual perversion and hypocrisy. We are no longer moral or ethical beacons but have become the purveyors of civilization destroying policies.
It is true, "If we lose freedom here, there's no place to escape to. This is the last stand on earth. " (source) I think even you know this. Sometimes you may resent our desire to hold on to our freedom, but secretly you know all humans yearn for the freedom to be left alone; to live life with minimal interference from government or our fellow man. This is why you teem to our shores and cross our borders in the dark of night. You too want that freedom.
But more and more, our short sighted leaders do not think of America as a special place. They think we are backward and bitter, clinging to our Constitution. They are trying everything to uncouple us from our inalienable rights by trying to erode those very rights by devaluing them, while claiming to be expanding them to others. But our rights aren't given away so easily.
Dear world, I apologize. I say sorry to the young and old who dreamed of coming to this land of opportunity only to find it often more oppressive than the place from which they left. Our taxes, our political correctness, our egg-shell feelings. You thought you'd start a new life in this New Colossus. No longer is the USA the Mother of Exiles but of elitists who manipulate the masses promising them golden parachutes instead of doors of opportunity. No longer is hard work and dedication the first principle of every American; but most now claim "fairness" when they really mean forcing others to sustain them. No such idea was present in the foundation of this place called America. The idea that one day there would be almost half the population living off the labor of the other half is not the vision those first settlers had in mind.
I apologize for not doing more to ensure this place to which your ancestors came remained the shining city on a hill so that your progeny could look upon it and dream and model their lives. After all, America was an idea long before it was ever a country. America is the culmination of thousands of years of the best cultures from around the world. But we have become less a melting pot and more a cesspool. We need people from outside and in to once again hearken to the principles that gave birth to America. Liberty WITH responsibility. Self-sufficiency with freewill charity rather than welfare by compulsion which is extortion.
Either we soon restore the experiment that is this idea and this place called America or our time will pass and the world will await another day of its choosing when the innate human desire for freedom rises again and a new nation is born.
