Two of the academics behind that ‘horrible’ Snopes fact-check of The Babylon Bee get funding from Facebook

Twitchy - Sat, 08/17/2019 - 13:01

Yesterday we told you how Snopes declared that The Babylon Bee was “among the most shared factually inaccurate content in almost every survey of this research,” but it’s actually worse than that:

Stories published by The Babylon Bee were among the most shared factually inaccurate content in almost every survey of this research. https://t.co/x96rPCl1w9

— snopes.com (@snopes) August 16, 2019

The “research” they’re basing this on is “horrible.” Here’s Bee CEO Kyle Mann:

That survey @snopes shared is horrible. Did they seriously paraphrase Bee stories and ask people if they thought they were true? That's an awful way to figure out what percentage of people will believe satire. pic.twitter.com/tDHnTx4h41

— Kyle Mann (@The_Kyle_Mann) August 16, 2019

Yes. Yes they did.

And here’s Bee writer Frank Fleming on what’s going on with some of the examples in their survey:

Man, I honestly thought we were done with the whole Snopes saga and then they commission a friggin’ survey asking if people believe our articles.

— Frank J. Fleming (@IMAO_) August 16, 2019

According to a survey, apparently this one fooled a lot of people, but it's hard to believe that if people actually read the article.https://t.co/JHeuKmIt6I

— Frank J. Fleming (@IMAO_) August 16, 2019

This one also made the survey. It was one of my earliest articles and my first to get Snopesed. I saw it memed as real, but it's so silly when you read it. I love the final paragraph about McConnell (this was back when they were ramming through Kavanaugh)https://t.co/INlrtoX1Cp

— Frank J. Fleming (@IMAO_) August 16, 2019

What’s also interesting about all of this is that Snopes isn’t behind the research. It’s actually from an academic research site called The Conversation and was done by two professors and a PhD student at The Ohio State University. Here’s the bottom of the article as it’s seen on Snopes (hint: something is missing):

But what Snopes left out is that the two professors get their funding from Facebook, which you can find out if you click the link to the original site:

You mean the same Facebook that threatened The Babylon Bee last year?

In case @BuzzFeedBen needs reminding, here's the message we got from Facebook last year: pic.twitter.com/nyXBbdAMR5

— Kyle Mann (@The_Kyle_Mann) August 1, 2019

And one of their conclusions? “Labeling an article as ‘satire'” like what Facebook tested is effective:

We found that labeling an article as “satire” was uniquely effective. Users were less likely to believe stories labeled as satire, were less likely to share them and saw the source as less credible. They also valued the warning.

Facebook tested this feature itself a few years ago, and Google News has started to label some satirical content.

Imagine that. The fact-checking site Snopes left out the important fact that the researchers who dinged The Babylon Bee are paid by Facebook while at the same time promoting what Facebook is doing.

Oh, and The Babylon Bee already lists themselves as a satire site on Facebook when you “Like” their page:

So, exactly what do the Facebook-funded professors want Snopes to do next?

Trump Attacks Tlaib for Declining the Opportunity to See Her Grandmother in Israel

LifeZette - Sat, 08/17/2019 - 02:03

President Donald Trump went after Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) (shown above right) on Friday, accusing her of creating a “set-up” when she refused an offer to visit her grandmother in Israel.

Trump went after Tlaib in a series of tweets, as The Daily Caller reported. Trump pointed out that she asked for permission to enter Israel and was later granted it on humanitarian grounds, only to claim that she was treated unfairly by the nation and refused to go.

Trump went so far as to declare Tlaib’s grandmother the “real winner” of the situation — since she now won’t be seeing her granddaughter.

“Israel was very respectful and nice to Rep. Rashida Tlaib, allowing her permission to visit her ‘grandmother.’ As soon as she was granted permission, she grandstanded and loudly proclaimed she would not visit Israel,” Trump tweeted. “Could this possibly have been a set-up? Israel acted appropriately!”

“Rep. Tlaib wrote a letter to Israeli officials desperately wanting to visit her grandmother,” Trump added. “Permission was quickly granted, whereupon Tlaib obnoxiously turned the approval down, a complete set-up. The only real winner here is Tlaib’s grandmother. She doesn’t have to see her now!”

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) August 16, 2019

This occurred just one day after Israel announced that it would be denying entry to the country to Tlaib and to Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) because of the duo’s history of anti-Israel remarks and support for the Boycott, Divest, Sanctions (BDS) movement.

Tlaib and Omar’s trip was also sponsored by Miftah, an anti-Israel organization that has expressed support for Palestinian suicide bombers.

“[T]he itinerary of the two congresswomen reveals that the sole purpose of their visit is to harm Israel and increase incitement against it,” said Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “In addition, the organization that is funding their trip is Miftah, which is an avid supporter of BDS, and among whose members are those who have expressed support for terrorism against Israel.”

Tlaib responded by sending a letter to Israeli officials begging to be allowed into the country so that she could visit her grandmother.

She promised to avoid any boycotts during her visit, and she said this was likely the last time she would ever get to see this family member.

Though Israeli officials immediately granted entry to Tlaib, she fired back by refusing to go and instead accusing Israel of oppressing her.

“Silencing me and treating me like a criminal is not what [my grandmother] wants for me,” Tlaib tweeted. “It would kill a piece of me. I have decided that visiting my grandmother under these oppressive conditions stands against everything I believe in — fighting against racism, oppression & injustice.”

Joe Biden makes ANOTHER gaffe, this time during a fundraiser in Delaware

Twitchy - Sat, 08/17/2019 - 01:21

Nothing to see here, right?

Fair, or not, this will get attention. Biden mentioned a speech he made last week about Trump and the rise of white nationalism, per tonight’s pooler. “He first said the speech took place in Burlington, Vermont. He immediately corrected himself to say it was in Burlington, Iowa.”

— Christopher Cadelago (@ccadelago) August 17, 2019

It’s the “frequency”:

The frequency of Biden’s slip-ups is what stands out. https://t.co/AVG2LOcItB

— Christopher Cadelago (@ccadelago) August 17, 2019

The former V.P. made the slip-up at a fundraiser in Delaware:

At a fundraiser tonight in Delaware, Biden recalled running for high school class president. “First of all, when I got there I used to stutter really badly. And second, there were only 60 guys in my class and they all knew me

“And they still voted for me,” Biden said to laughter

— Matt Viser (@mviser) August 17, 2019

Joe Biden in Delaware jokingly apologized to the crowd for the Secret Service presence that might occur next summer if he's elected president. He recalled how, when elected vice president, he told the Secret Service to “keep a distance” when he’s in his home state.

— Matt Viser (@mviser) August 17, 2019

“I’m not blaming him particularly for the shootings, in El Paso, but people listen,” Biden said. “People listen. These people come out from under the rocks when you do not in fact take them down, go after them.”

— Matt Viser (@mviser) August 17, 2019

As we told you earlier in the week, Biden’s staff was considering cutting back his appearances to hopefully cut back on the gaffes:

Here’s What Happened to ‘Easy Rider’ Actor Peter Fonda

LifeZette - Sat, 08/17/2019 - 01:13

He was 79 years old.

And actor Peter Fonda — who co-wrote and starred in the seminal 1960s counterculture film “Easy Rider” — is now gone.

In a statement that Fox News obtained, the actor’s family said that Fonda — the son of Henry Fonda and the younger brother of actress-activist Jane Fonda — died Friday morning at his Los Angeles home.

He had suffered respiratory failure due to lung cancer.

“In one of the saddest moments of our lives, we are not able to find the appropriate words to express the pain in our hearts. As we grieve, we ask that you respect our privacy,” the family statement noted.

Today, we remember two-time Oscar nominee Peter Fonda, who co-wrote and starred in the groundbreaking “Easy Rider.” pic.twitter.com/oHDZHGsJjD

— The Academy (@TheAcademy) August 17, 2019

“And, while we mourn the loss of this sweet and gracious man, we also wish for all to celebrate his indomitable spirit and love of life. In honor of Peter, please raise a glass to freedom,” the statement also said.

Peter Fonda — born into a celebrated Hollywood family — made sure to make his own way.

He earned a Best Original Screenplay Oscar nomination for his co-writing of “Easy Rider.”

But he lost that award ultimately to William Goldman’s script for “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” as Fox News pointed out in a piece on Fonda.

Nearly 30 years after that, the actor grabbed a Best Actor nomination for his work in the 1997 film “Ulee’s Gold.” He lost out again — to contemporary Jack Nicholson’s efforts in “As Good As It Gets.”

But Fonda did earn a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Series, Miniseries or Television Movie for his efforts in the 1999 Showtime original “The Passion of Ayn Rand.”

Fonda was certainly no “easy rider” when it came to expressing political opinions or drawing eyeballs on social media. The actor was in the forefront of anti-Trump resistance for some time.

Last summer, he openly advocated for Democratic voters to commit a felony in the fall 2018 midterm elections.

At one time estranged from his father, Peter Fonda grew closer to Henry Fonda as the years went on; the elder Fonda died in 1982.

In a since-deleted tweet, Fonda called on Democrats who had voting-age children to commit the act of filling out their ballots — and turn those ballots in.

“Then we have to take them by the hand and lead them to the water and teach them to drink! If you have a millennial in your family, take their early ballots, fill them out and mail them in, or take the ballot to the voting place and give it to the officials … no more worrying!” Fonda wrote last year on Twitter.

Related: After Peter Trump’s Threats Against Trump Family, Secret Service Gets Involved

Fonda also made waves early in 2018 when he called for President Donald Trump’s youngest child, Barron, to be ripped from his mother Melania Trump’s arms — and “put in a cage with pedophiles.”

As many outlets reported, Fonda was born in New York in 1940.

He was 10 years old and his sister Jane was 12 when their mother, Frances Ford Seymour, passed away by her own hand.

At one time estranged from his father, he grew closer to Henry Fonda as the years went on; the elder Fonda died in 1982.

Peter Fonda studied acting in college and made his stage debut in 1961 in the Broadway production of “Blood, Sweat, and Standley Poole,” as People magazine noted.

Medical Examiner Concludes Jeffrey Epstein Died by His Own Hand

LifeZette - Fri, 08/16/2019 - 21:44

The chief medical examiner for New York City ruled on Friday that disgraced financier and accused sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein committed suicide by hanging in his prison cell last week.

Dr. Barbara Sampson, in a brief statement on Friday, said her ruling came following a “careful review of all investigative information, including complete autopsy findings, as Fox News and other outlets reported.

Epstein last Saturday was found unresponsive in his jail cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center (MCC).

He was taken to the hospital and pronounced dead hours later.

Epstein had been awaiting trial on federal sex trafficking charges involving underage girls.

He had been placed on a suicide watch in July after he was found on the floor of his cell with bruises on his neck.

White House officially suspends Brian Karem’s hard pass for 30 days; Next step: Federal court

Twitchy - Fri, 08/16/2019 - 21:42

It’s official!

After his failed appeal, the White House suspended Playboy journo and CNN analyst Brian Karem’s hard pass for 30 days over his confrontation with Sebastian Gorka in the Rose Garden earlier this summer:

Just received word from the WH – finalized my hard pass suspension for 30 days – according to their letter – part of it because they think I do a bad Rodney Dangerfield impersonation. We will now go to court and sue. @BoutrousTed @realDonaldTrump

— Brian J. Karem (@BrianKarem) August 16, 2019

Next step? Federal court:

Today, @PressSec unjustly suspended the hard pass of our White House correspondent, @BrianKarem, for 30 days. We stand with Mr. Karem and, incoordination with @BoutrousTed, will fight back against this unconstitutional restriction on the free press in federal court.

— Playboy (@Playboy) August 16, 2019

Ted Boutrous, Karem’s lawyer, accused the White House of violating his client’s First and Fifth Amendment’s rights:

This suspension of @Playboy White House correspondent @BrianKarem’s hard pass violates both the First Amendment and the Due Process Clause of the Fifth Amendment. https://t.co/AaKuvL7QfN

— Ted Boutrous (@BoutrousTed) August 16, 2019

Of note, Boutros was Jim Acosta’s lawyer when the White House was unsuccessful at revoking his hard pass:

To wit: Last November, the White House revoked the hard-pass credentials of CNN chief White House correspondent Jim Acosta, for whimsical reasons that withered in a federal court hearing. A federal judge soon ruled that CNN would likely prevail in its arguments that the stripping of the hard pass violated his due-process rights. Access restored!

The rebuke from U.S. District Judge Timothy Kelly came quickly and unequivocally. Footage of Acosta entering the White House grounds with his hard pass circulated everywhere. It was a big embarrassment for President Trump and his colleagues.

But with Karem, we have video evidence that he behaved badly. Will the court rule the same way? More from Boutros here:

Here is my statement regarding @PressSec’s unconstitutional suspension of @Playboy White House correspondent @BrianKarem’s hard passhttps://t.co/JqB4G7w5oL. Thread below of text.

Anti-Trump Group Has a Petition Going to Rename Part of Fifth Avenue for Obama

LifeZette - Fri, 08/16/2019 - 21:27

Trump Tower is a gleaming, iconic building in the middle of Manhattan.

It’s a sign of wealth and what humanity can build and create.

Yet this past Monday, Elizabeth Rowin, organizer of a new petition, told Newsweek in an interview that a campaign to have part of Fifth Avenue renamed first began as a joke last year.

“I honestly started it as a joke. I saw a comedian joke about how it would make Trump so mad if it [the street] was named after former President [Barack] Obama and thought, why not.”

If 100,000 signatures are required to get part of Fifth Avenue renamed for a former president as proposed, I suggest a second petition is necessary for the people who don’t want the name changed.

A third option, of course, would be to rename it after the current president — who has a connection to the address and lives there.

Related: Trump Rips Biden’s Plan to Scale Back His Campaign

A Moveon.org petition isn’t worth the paper it wasn’t written on, in my opinion. There is another law regarding how petitions are to be submitted and validated — and this petition doesn’t even come close. In other words, this move couldn’t be more childish.

Here’s how The Hill described it in its piece a few days ago: “More than 70,000 people have signed onto a petition that seeks to rename the portion of Fifth Avenue in front of the Trump Tower in Manhattan after former President Obama … [The online] petition … had racked up nearly 71,000 signatures on MoveOn.org as of Tuesday afternoon.”

The Hill also noted that the petition reads, in part: “We request the New York City Mayor and City Council do the same by renaming a block of Fifth Avenue after the former president whose many accomplishments include: saving our nation from the Great Recession; serving two completely scandal-free terms in office; and taking out Osama bin Laden, the mastermind behind September 11th, which killed over 3,000 New Yorkers.”

Here’s a new update to the above: By Thursday afternoon this week, the petition had more than 302,000 signatures — plus a new mission calling for 325,000 signatures after the previous goal was surpassed, NBC News reported.

Liberal Democrats can do whatever they want, but their legacy and that of Obama will remain the same: They are, in my view, dividers and imposters who have not put America first.

I’m guessing that only a tiny percentage of those who actually live in New York City will support this move.

Anthony Scaramucci says Twitter suspended him because he made fun of Trump’s weight

Twitchy - Fri, 08/16/2019 - 21:00

Axios’ Jonathan Swan reports that Anthony Scaramucci has been suspended by Twitter, allegedly over a tweet where the former White House communications director made fun of President Trump’s weight:

. @Scaramucci says Twitter has temporarily suspended his account. “I think it is related to ‘fat shaming’ President Trump,” the president’s former communications director says. “I should have said he is the largest proportioned President since William Howard Taft. My bad.” pic.twitter.com/0nnH9rtjxg

— Jonathan Swan (@jonathanvswan) August 16, 2019

But, that tweet is still publicly visible so Scaramucci’s theory really doesn’t make much sense:

FWIW (and it’s not worth much), the Mooch’s theory is wrong. If the tweet he thought was the offending tweet was actually the offending tweet there would be a notice on it, per Twitter’s rules. https://t.co/WC9qf40lIL

— Jonathan Swan (@jonathanvswan) August 16, 2019

Here’s the tweet in question:

Said the fattest President since William Howard Taft . . . https://t.co/T3Cbnx5T4S

— Anthony Scaramucci (@Scaramucci) August 16, 2019

Anyway, the suspension is over and Scaramucci took another shot at Trump, this time over his knowledge of American history:

Do you think @POTUS knows who William Howard Taft is?

Don’t pick on those anti-Semites! Molly Jong-Fast is super cranky with Republicans for caring about Israel and Jews

Twitchy - Fri, 08/16/2019 - 19:30

Imagine the knots someone would have to tie themselves in to somehow be angry at Republicans for standing up for Israel. And not only that but going on to claim they’re somehow using their concern for Jews as a way to launder racism toward Muslims.

Don’t make that face, we didn’t write it.

Molly Jong-Fast did though.

I’m sick of scary republicans using fake concern for the Jews as a way of laundering their racism towards Muslims.

— Molly Jong-Fast (@MollyJongFast) August 16, 2019

Alrighty then.

That’s her takeaway? Although to be fair, the phrase ‘laundering racism’ is pretty damn good.

Too bad she used it to make a stupid point.

I am sick of ppl using muslims as a way to launder their hatred towards others https://t.co/fXClozR34w

We’re sick of people using Twitchy to as a way to launder their hatred toward Ron Perlman.

Wait, does that work?

Maybe Tom Arnold.

Them being muslim had nothing to do with any of this

— Bob Malak (@bob_malak) August 16, 2019

BUT RACISM.

Molly continued.

We’re tired of people like Molly using fake concern over Muslims to launder her bigotry toward Republicans.

There we go, that works.

Dear @Liz_Cheney, you don’t get to use jews as a bludgeon against other groups you want to discriminate against. We’re not going to let you.
Thanks though.

— Molly Jong-Fast (@MollyJongFast) August 16, 2019

Oh, good grief.

What do you want to bet she actually has Liz blocked?

As a Jew, I was always taught that it was my responsibility to stand up for oppressed peoples, because of our shared struggles.

— Molly Jong-Fast (@MollyJongFast) August 16, 2019

And gosh, that’s what Republicans have been trying to do but … k.

The only racism evident is that of both Tlaib and Omar.
The insistance of defending their hate in the name of "resistance" has been the real spectacle here.

— AtticusLee (@AtticusLee6) August 16, 2019

Molly not only picked a fight with Liz Cheney but she went after another Liz.

Maybe she has a thing against the name Liz.

Israel barring Omar & Tlaib has nothing to do with their Muslim religion & everything to do with the fact that they support BDS, don't believe Israel has a right to exist, & planned a trip paid for by a group who advocates for terrorism against Israel.

But you know all that. https://t.co/TVC7YAFUNc

Rob Reiner says Trump must be impeached for ‘assault on democracy’ of slamming BDS-supporting Reps Tlaib & Omar

Twitchy - Fri, 08/16/2019 - 19:29

Well, now that Rob Reiner’s high hopes for the Mueller report to lead to Trump’s impeachment seem to have all but fizzled out except in the dark corners of actor/director’s head, there is yet another news item that the leader of the Hollywood chapter of the Resistance hopes might do the impeachment trick: Trump’s tweet this week about Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar and their views on Israel:

To suggest that 2 duly elected Members of Congress be refused entry to Israel saying “they hate all Jewish people” is just latest assault by this ignoramous on our Democracy. There are no straws. There are no camels’ backs. There is only Impeachment.

— Rob Reiner (@robreiner) August 15, 2019

We’ll say this for Reiner: He never gives up him impeachment dream, no matter how far he has to stretch:

Impeachment is not going to happen. And the anti-Semite haters can't go to Israel.

But you are right about one thing, @robreiner. There are no straws.

At least not in California. https://t.co/ucA71Dnt57

‘Best Preparation for Responsible Adulthood Is Training in Responsibility During Childhood’

LifeZette - Fri, 08/16/2019 - 19:05

Let’s look at the threats to self-esteem that must come as your child matures.

From about three years of age, your little pride and joy begins making his way into the world of other people.

This initial “turning loose” period is often extremely threatening to the compulsive mother. Her natural reaction is to hold her baby close to her breast, smothering him in “protection.” By watching, guarding, defending, and shielding night and day, perhaps she can spare her child some of the pain she herself experienced growing up.

However, her intense desire to help may actually interfere with growth and development. Certain risks must be tolerated if a child is to learn and progress. He will never learn to walk if he is not allowed to fall down in the process.

About 20 years later, however, at the other end of childhood, we expect some radical changes to have occurred. That individual should then be able to assume the full responsibilities of young adulthood.

The adult is expected to spend money wisely, hold down a job, be loyal to his or her spouse, support the needs of a family, obey the laws of the land, and be a good citizen.

During the course of childhood, an individual should progress from a position of no responsibility to a position of full responsibility. Now, friends and neighbors, how do little John and Joan get from position A to position B? How does this magical transformation of self-discipline take place?

Related: Setting Kids Up for Success: Do These Four Things

There are many self-appointed experts on child raising who seem to feel it all should happen toward the latter end of adolescence, about 15 minutes before John or Joan leaves home permanently. Prior to that time, the child should be allowed to do whatever is desired at the moment.

I reject that notion categorically. The best preparation for responsible adulthood is training in responsibility during childhood.

This is not to say that the child is horsewhipped into acting like an adult. It does mean that the child should be encouraged to progress on an orderly timetable of events, carrying the level of responsibility appropriate for each age.

Enter again the emotional and physical threats of which I’ve spoken. They can easily cause an anxious mother to turn loose the rope in the tug-of-war. Her idea is: “If I keep him dependent on me as long as possible, I can better protect him from the cruel world.” Therefore, she won’t let him cross the street for several years after he could make it safely.

She does everything, requiring nothing in return. She enters into each neighborhood argument that occurs among his friends, taking his side regardless of who was right. Later she walks him to school, holding his hand with the proud assurance that she is being a good mother.

And heaven help the teacher who tries to discipline her little tiger! All through childhood ,she fosters a continuation of the infancy relationship, retaining all the responsibility on her back.

Does Junior prosper under this set-up? Of course not. Mother is giving of herself totally, which seems a loving thing to do. However, at the same time, she is allowing her overprotected child to fall behind in the normal timetable in preparation for ultimate release as a young adult.

As a 10-year-old, he can’t make himself do anything unpleasant, since he never has had any experience in handling things that are difficult. He does not know how to “give” to someone else, for he has only thought of himself.

Related: Are Your Kids Always Fighting with Each Other? Here’s How to Solve That

He finds it hard to make decisions or to exercise self-discipline. A few years later, he will be an adolescent completely unprepared for freedom and responsibility.

His future spouse is in for some surprises, I shudder to contemplate.

Marguerite and Willard Beecher, authors of an excellent book, “Parents on the Run,” first described the concept this scenario presents. They stated, and I strongly agree, that the parent must gain freedom from the child so that the child can gain freedom from the parent.

Think about that for a moment. If you never get free from your child by transferring responsibility, then the child remains bound to you as well. You have knotted each other in a paralyzing interdependency that stifles growth and development.

One young widow had been left with the terrifying task of raising a baby by herself. Her Davie was the only person left in the world she really loved. Her reaction was to smother him totally. The boy was seven years old when she came to me. He was afraid to sleep in a room by himself. He refused to stay with a babysitter and even resisted going to school. He did not dress himself, and his behavior was infantile in every regard.

Instead of waiting in the reception room while I talked to his mother, in fact, he found my office and stood with his hand on the doorknob for an hour, whimpering and begging to be admitted. His mother interpreted all this as evidence of his fear that she would die as his father had. In response, she bound him even more tightly, sacrificing all her own needs and desires.

She could neither go on dates nor bring any men into their home. She could not get involved in any activities of her own or have any adult experiences without her cling-along son.

She had never gained her freedom from her child, and he, in turn, had not gained his freedom from his loving mama.

Have you allowed your child to enjoy age-appropriate freedom and responsibility?

Each year a child should make more decisions. More routine responsibilities of living should fall on his shoulders as he is able to handle them.

Does your fear of emotional and physical hardships keep a child locked in your arms?

Are you afraid to make him work because he protests so loudly?

I have discovered that this process of dependency may not always be motivated by an admirable desire to protect the child. Very often, a mother (more frequently than the father) will foster a binding relationship to meet her own emotional needs.

Perhaps the romance has gone out of her marriage and a child is her only real source of love. Perhaps she has had trouble making lasting friendships. For whatever reason, she wants to remain at the center of the life of her child.

Thus, the parent fosters dependence, waiting on the child hand and foot. She refuses to obtain her freedom for the specific purpose of denying him his. I know one mother-daughter team that maintained this interlocutory relationship until the mother’s death at 94 years of age. The daughter, then 72, found herself unmarried, alone, and on her own for the first time.

It’s a frightening thing to experience in old age what other people endure in adolescence.

As indicated, this vital task of turning a child loose is not restricted to the early years. It is equally important all the way through the march toward young adulthood.

Related: ‘Parental Involvement Is the Key to Getting Kids Through Storms of Adolescence’

Each year a child should make more decisions. More routine responsibilities of living should fall on his shoulders as he is able to handle them.

A seven-year-old, for example, is usually capable of selecting clothing for the day, making the bed each morning, and keeping a bedroom straight. A nine- or 10-year-old may carry more freedom, such as the choice of television programs to watch (within reason).

I am not suggesting abdicating parental leadership. Instead, I believe we should give conscious thought to the reasonable, orderly transfer of freedom and responsibility so that we are preparing the child each year for that moment of full independence.

Ilhan Omar further cements her anti-Semitic-garbage-person status in brazenly intellectually dishonest thread railing against Israel

Twitchy - Fri, 08/16/2019 - 18:38

Good news, everyone! When Ilhan Omar lashed out at Israel yesterday over their decision to bar her and Rashida Tlaib from entering due to their open BDS advocacy, she was only getting started. Turns out she had lots more BS to sow.

Let’s be clear: the goal of our trip was to witness firsthand what is happening on the ground in Palestine and hear from stakeholders —our job as Members of Congress.

But since we were unable to fulfill our role as legislators, I am sharing what we would have seen. (THREAD)

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

“In Palestine.” Right off the bat, it’s obvious she’s full of it.

HA! This is hysterical! No preconceived notions here! Just a wide open mind.

— Jeryl Bier (@JerylBier) August 16, 2019

She’s a real piece of work, isn’t she?

First, I planned to hold meetings with members of the Knesset (both Jewish and Arab) along with Israeli security officials.

The claims of @IsraeliPM otherwise are not true.

As a delegation, we were also were scheduling a meeting with @USAmbIsrael. https://t.co/tazkSiUYkM

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

Whose claims are untrue, Ilhan?

This is a lie, here is your full schedule published by your office, you didn’t plan a single meeting with members of the Knesset or Israeli security officials. https://t.co/TuP3HeCNrs pic.twitter.com/iHtIElwDPz

Ilhan Omar is lying, again

Omar's itinerary for her trip was published yesterday and it included "no Israeli officials of any government agency or political party"https://t.co/doqEgrg1H0 https://t.co/ghXrUHteQi

Here is the itinerary, provided via @gilicohen10, which is referenced the news article above pic.twitter.com/gUbc2YHgEK

— Ryan Saavedra (@RealSaavedra) August 16, 2019

Talk about gaslighting. But don’t worry — she’s not finished lying yet.

Then, the delegation was going to receive a briefing on the Bedouin community in East Jerusalem. For decades, Bedouin homes have been bulldozed and communities have been uprooted in order to build settlements on Palestinian land.

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

Though these settlements are illegal under international law and threaten peace, settlement growth has skyrocketed under Trump. https://t.co/2oCeHr4q2x

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

Then the UN was going to brief us about the effect of humanitarian aid cuts on Palestinians.

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

Last year, the Trump Admin announced the U.S. will no longer contribute to the United Nations’ relief agency for Palestinian refugees, threatening the livelihood of millions and violating international law.https://t.co/lmoXo6ruZB

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

We planned a video conference with youth from Gaza.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza is one of the worst in the world—with 97% of water unfit for human consumption and on the verge of collapse. Most of the people in Gaza are children.

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

Israeli officials do not let Members of Congress visit Gaza.https://t.co/66ruDIh5fo

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

Maybe because they don’t want members of Congress to get blown up?

We then planned to visit Hebron. Once a bustling economic hub, settlement expansion has resulted in a two-tiered city, with Palestinians under military occupation forced to walk on the opposite side of the street from Israelis. https://t.co/UqTzOMb0Hs

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

77% of shops have closed bc of military occupation. Palestinians walk with garbage nets above their heads, put up to catch trash thrown by settlers. Violent attacks on Palestinians are routine.

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

We were going to receive a tour of the city from @btsisrael, Israeli military veterans who aim to raise awareness about their experiences with the occupation. https://t.co/aEiRnMwWaT

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

We planned to visit the separation wall around historic Bethlehem. Only 13% of Bethlehem is now accessible to Palestinian use.

The wall, built in 2002 against international law, was said at the time to be “temporary.”

It still stands. https://t.co/EVftWuvtLe

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

This was not the first trip of its kind. Last year,@repmarkpocan, @rephankjohnson and others visited with an almost identical itinerary.

Other Members of Congress have done similar trips.https://t.co/ia2OFlqbg5

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

And, as has already been pointed out, those “similar trips” took place before the 2017 law barring BDS proponents was passed.

But my colleagues and I are not the only ones who are being denied the right to see for themselves the reality on the ground in the West Bank. @OmarSShakir is currently facing deportation for his work with Human Rights Watch. https://t.co/LewHoFiKIo

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

Yeah, Omar Shakir seems like a real stand-up guy.

In 2018, the Netanyahu government refused entry to Katherine Frank and my friend @VinceWarren who had arrived on a mostly-POC human rights mission. https://t.co/P8Exe1mRmN

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

About that:

"…who had arrived on a mostly-POC human rights mission…"

and yet only two were refused entry, one of them white?

But look who WAS allowed in: @TamikaDMallory, a @LouisFarrakhan fan. https://t.co/9KahOT0PoQ pic.twitter.com/qqsjbtUyF1

— Jeryl Bier (@JerylBier) August 16, 2019

"The group included Tamika Mallory, a well-known name in the U.S. as co-chair of the Women's March. She has been criticized for refusing to condemn the anti-Semitic Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan."https://t.co/uurhlILm9U

— Jeryl Bier (@JerylBier) August 16, 2019

Seems like the Netanyahu government made the right call.

And of course, this lack of respect for freedom of movement and freedom of expression is part of the day-to-day lives of Palestinians living in the occupied territories.https://t.co/ZdIgGQUTZg

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

Though we were unable to witness this firsthand, there are other ways for people to learn about the occupation.

Follow @alhaq_org, @btselem, @amnesty and other groups speaking out about human rights violations.

Oh, is that what those groups are doing?

Follow @PeterBeinart, who has an excellent piece laying out the realities of the occupation and making the case for more reporting and visits by Members of Congress. https://t.co/W75ycDHK3w

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

“Follow Peter Beinart.” That alone should tell you that her intentions were never pure. But of course there’s more:

Follow @IfnotnowOrg, who gave a virtual tour of the occupied territories here. https://t.co/5pYFOgKYB0

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

Yes, by all means. Hear out the notorious anti-Semites and terrorist apologists at IfNotNow.

As many of my colleagues have stated in the last 24 hours, we give Israel more than $3 billion in aid every year. This is predicated on their being an important ally in the region, and the 'only democracy' in the Middle East.

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

Denying visits to duly elected Members of Congress is not consistent with being either an ally or a democracy. We should be leveraging that aid to stop the settlements and ensure full rights for Palestinians.

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

Ilhan Omar is apparently counting on her followers not to know or care that Rashida Tlaib was invited to visit Israel on the condition that she didn’t advocate for its destruction while there and chose instead to stay home and accuse Israel of anti-Muslim bigotry.

The occupation is real.
Barring members of Congress from seeing it does not make it go away.
We must end it—together. (END)

— Ilhan Omar (@IlhanMN) August 16, 2019

The only thing Ilhan Omar wants to end is Israel itself.

In an exclusive interview, George Gounelas, who managed Dustin Hice at the Old Stove Pub in July of 2018, detailed what allegedly occurred on the night of the bizarre encounter at Murf’s Backstreet Tavern, which is located in the prestigious Hamptons area east of New York City. Gounelas is named in the suit filed by Hice.

Lemon, through CNN, has vehemently denied Hice’s allegations.

Interesting.

The sexual assault claims against Don Lemon are now more substantiated than any of the ones against Justice Kavanaugh

— J. Arthur Bloom (@j_arthur_bloom) August 16, 2019

Considering none of Christine Blasey-Ford’s claims could be substantiated that’s a good point.

So unlike Blasey-Ford, the witness actually confirms their story.

We must believe!

Isn’t that how this works?

Well, hard to think of a lower bar to get over

— Fusilli Spock (@awstar11) August 16, 2019

So @donlemon offers a 6 figure settlement to Hice for something that didn’t happen?

Wait, what?

Exactly. Should’ve paid up. pic.twitter.com/G9FBAH0s3o

Whoa boy.

*popcorn*

Wonder what @ReliableSources thinks of all this?

Good question.

‘Uh oh, Rashida’: Rashida Tlaib blocks Steven Crowder on Twitter, despite court ruling that public officials like her can’t do that

Twitchy - Fri, 08/16/2019 - 17:54

Steven Crowder’s among the many people who’ve been giving Democratic Rep. Rashida Tlaib a hard time over her being an anti-Semite and all-around garbage person.

When I won, it gave the Palestinian people hope that someone will finally speak the truth about the inhumane conditions. I can't allow the State of Israel to take away that light by humiliating me & use my love for my sity to bow down to their oppressive & racist policies. https://t.co/OYIwExV0ga

— Rashida Tlaib (@RashidaTlaib) August 16, 2019

How about this, @RashidaTlaib? Stop calling for the destruction of the country you want to visit long enough for you to visit. Fair?https://t.co/nQI7HjXHLw

— Steven Crowder (@scrowder) August 16, 2019

And go figure. The same woman who’s at ease hanging out with terrorist sympathizers and propagators of the blood libel apparently can’t take the heat that comes with Crowder telling her not to be an anti-Semite:

Man, I’d really love to tweet Rashida Tlaib and encourage her to visit her grandmother, but I can’t because she’s blocked me. Which is actually illegal…

— Steven Crowder (@scrowder) August 16, 2019

Uh oh, Rashida… pic.twitter.com/OZEY5EeEfk

— Steven Crowder (@scrowder) August 16, 2019

Courts have indeed ruled that public officials like Rashida Tlaib can’t block users. From the article Crowder cites, which was written in September 2018:

In May, a judge ruled that President Trump could not block people from following him on Twitter. It was the most prominent in a series of rulings finding that access to public figures on social media is a constitutional right. “The suppression of critical commentary regarding elected officials is the quintessential form of viewpoint discrimination against which the First Amendment guards,” Judge James Cacheris wrote in a case involving a supervisor in Fairfax County, Va.

And then of course just this past July, three judges on the Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals ruled unanimously that Donald Trump — and, therefore, by extension, other public officials — is not allowed to block users from seeing his tweets because it would violate the First Amendment. It was a stupid ruling, but a ruling nonetheless. And in blocking Crowder, Tlaib appears to be violating that ruling.

Sad!

She'll make the same argument that AOC made, that's her personal, not work account.

— BadgerFool (@BadgerFool) August 16, 2019

We wouldn’t put it past her. Still doesn’t change the fact that Rashida Tlaib’s a hypocrite (and an anti-Semite and all-around garbage person).

NOW you’re thinkin’! Jesse Kelly’s plan to ‘take over’ Greenland instead of buying it sounds hilariously FAMILIAR

Twitchy - Fri, 08/16/2019 - 17:42

Jesse Kelly is right.

Argh, don’t tell him we said so, we’ll NEVER hear the end of it, but he is right about Greenland.

Why should we buy it when we could just take it over? And his plan, while it’s vaguely familiar, seems like it could work for us, don’cha think?

We don’t need to buy Greenland. We just need to immigrate there en masse, refuse to assimilate, and demonize anyone who sees what we’re doing as “racist”.

— Jesse Kelly (@JesseKellyDC) August 16, 2019

Gosh, where have we heard this before? Hrm.

And a heater. We need a heater

TRUMPLAND.

And millions of tiny resistance heads just exploded all over Twitter.

Heh.
