WATCH: Afghan War Vet Blasts NYT Editorial Accusing Military Of White Supremacy

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 17:39

Just in time for Memorial Day, on Saturday the New York Times editorial board accused the United States military of racism in a piece titled, “Why Does The U.S. Military Celebrate White Supremacy?”

Pentagon spokesman Jonathan Rath Hoffman tweeted: “On a solemn day for remembering those that have given their lives for our country fighting against tyranny and subjugation, the NYT has more than a million possible stories of the ultimate sacrifice by American patriots that they could tell. But they don’t … The Department of Defense is the most diverse meritocracy in the country and the most powerful force for good in world history. We have many stories of valor still waiting to be told this Memorial Day weekend.”

Instead they chose to attack the US military – the most diverse meritocracy in the country and the most powerful force for good in world history. We have many stories of valor still waiting to be told this Memorial Day weekend.

Retired Staff Sgt. Jones, a bomb technician who lost his legs in an explosion in Afghanistan and is a Fox News contributor, ripped the Times on Fox & Friends, saying:

It’s something that just stirs your blood a little bit, but then you have to realize who’s doing it; this is The New York Times … There are 365 days in a year. There has been 150 years since the Civil War. Why is the New York Times writing this on Memorial Day this year of all years? Because it’s relevance, right? It’s the opportunity to get people to talk about them.

And so right now, today, there’s a black man or woman in the Marine Corps, probably a first lieutenant who will become the very first black commandant of the Marine Corps, and that person has to wake up this morning knowing the goals and dreams ahead of him and that service loves them and wants them to succeed and read something about bases that were named probably before he or she was born for people that were alive 100 years before that, and worry about that?  The New York Times tells them that’s what they should be focused on, that’s what they should care about rather than defending the country, or leading, or achieving some of the goals they have in front of them, and to me that’s offensive, that’s as bad as saying that coronavirus was warranted because we had slavery two hundred years ago. That’s not how we look at our country … I find it offensive and repulsive.

The Times, boasting that its editorial board, “is a group of opinion journalists whose views are informed by expertise, research, debate and certain longstanding values,” began its polemic by citing the Charleston, S.C., massacre in 2015, saying it “dispensed with the fiction that the Confederate battle flag was an innocuous symbol of ‘Southern pride.,’ adding, “A murderer’s manifesto describing the killings as the start of a race war — combined with photos of the killer brandishing a pistol and a rebel flag — made it impossible to ignore the connection between Confederate ideology and a blood-drenched tradition of racial terrorism that dates back to the mid-19th century in the American South.”

After listing the places where the Confederate flag or images of Confederate generals had been removed, the Times wrote, “Institutions that could once have wrapped themselves in Confederacy ideology without consequence were put on notice public sentiment had shifted.” The Times declared, “Innocent intentions cannot obscure the truth that secessionists embarked on the Civil War to guarantee the rights of some human beings to own others, or the fact that the Confederate banner represents the same white supremacist values as  — and is often displayed in tandem with ‘the Nazi swastika.”

Then the Times got to the heart of its attack: “This same toxic legacy clings to the 10 United States military installations across the South that were named for Confederate Army officers during the first half of the 20th century. Apologists often describe the names as a necessary gesture of reconciliation in the wake of the Civil War. In truth, the namings reflect a federal embrace of white supremacy that found its most poisonous expression in military installations where black servicemen were deliberately placed under the command of white Southerners — who were said to better ‘understand’ Negroes — and confined to substandard housing, segregated transportation systems and even ‘colored only’ seating in movie houses.”

The Times then pronounced, “The base names were part of a broad federal sellout to white supremacy that poisoned the whole of the United States.”

The Times concluded, “Military installations that celebrate white supremacist traitors have loomed steadily larger in the civic landscape since the country began closing smaller bases and consolidating its forces on larger ones. Bases named for men who sought to destroy the Union in the name of racial injustice are an insult to the ideals servicemen and women are sworn to uphold — and an embarrassing artifact of the time when the military itself embraced anti-American values. It is long past time for those bases to be renamed.”

Writing at Townhall, columnist Ellie Bufkin noted:

The editorial board of the Grey Lady then revises history entirely by characterizing the whole cause of the south in the Civil War as being driven by white supremacy and a desire to “keep black people in chains.” Referring to leaders of the Confederacy as “traitors” on multiple occasions, the board dismisses any defense which claims the base designations are historic marks that represent only the individuals, not ideologies …

Hawaii Proposes ‘Feminist Economic Recovery Plan’ Filled With Sex Discrimination

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 17:19

What’s a “feminist economic recovery plan”? Exactly what you would expect: A document full of policies aimed to help women at the expense of men that will ultimately end up hurting women as well.

Such a proposal has been developed by the Hawai’I State Commission on the Status of Women, part of the state’s Department of Human Services. The plan is ostensibly called “Building Bridges, Not Walking on Backs,” even though it does exactly what it claims it won’t.

The Lily summed up the policies included in the proposal:

A universal basic income. Special emergency funds for marginalized groups, including undocumented immigrant women, domestic workers, women with disabilities and sex-trafficking survivors. Waived co-payments for covid-19 tests and treatment, including for incarcerated women. A 20 percent pro rata share of the covid-19 response funds the express recovery needs of the indigenous population. A $24.80/hour minimum wage for single mothers. Free, publicly-funded child care for all essential workers.

Let’s take a look at just one of those proposals: The $24.80 per hour minimum wage for single mothers. What about single fathers? What about merit? How long until stores start hiring anyone but single mothers to avoid having to pay them so much extra simply based on their circumstances and not their performance or skill?

This proposal could backfire spectacularly as businesses realize it would be cheaper not to hire single mothers. It’s the gender wage gap put into practice – in reverse. One of the arguments in the gender-wage-gap myth is that women are simply paid less than men even though it is illegal. And if it were true that companies could get away with paying women less than men, then far more women would be hired so businesses could save the money. The fact is this is a myth – but Hawaii appears to want to make it a reality by paying a certain subclass of women more than anyone else.

In the actual plan, the minimum wage proposal is touted because it would “work to reduce homelessness, dependency on men, and costs to the state/DHS in terms of benefits to assist women because they comprise the majority of the state’s impoverished.”

“Dependency on men?” Some may notice that as a slight toward marriage, co-parenting, or any other situation where the father is involved in a child’s life.

Defense attorney Scott Greenfield suggested proposals like these would raise “a great many curious issues” due to “would appear to be outrageously unlawful sex discrimination with some serious likelihood of backfiring.”

“Higher min wage for women? Then hire men at lower min wage,” he added.

— Scott Greenfield (@ScottGreenfield) May 23, 2020

The economic proposal doesn’t just benefit women over men, it benefits “indigenous and immigrant women, caregivers, elderly women, femme-identifying and non-binary people, incarcerated women, unsheltered women, domestic abuse and sex trafficking survivors, and women with disabilities” over everyone else, according to The Lily. The website, it should be noted, did not present the proposal as a legal or moral mess.

The outlet spoke with Khara Jabola-Carolus, the executive director of the Commission on the Status of Women, who helped develop the plan. Jabola-Carolus revived the ridiculous claim that the coronavirus hurts women more than men, saying that men are more likely to die from the disease because of sexism against women. Seriously:

Even the fact that the virus is more deadly for men is tied to sexism, a form of inequality. Mortality is always higher for men because self care and health-seeking are seen as things that women do; men often don’t want to be associated with women-type behaviors. It’s well documented that men often don’t take care of their health for these cultural reasons. Meanwhile the impacts of covid-19 outside of the virus itself are more devastating to women, for cultural reasons as well as systemic sexism.

It’s not “women-type behaviors” that keep men from seeking healthcare, it’s a fear of being called weak and people like Jabola-Carolus who see sexism in everything and who call for constant attention to women and their problems at the expense of men and their problems. Does Hawaii have a Commission on the Status of Men? No. It has a commission on fatherhood, but it doesn’t get nearly as much attention.

As The Daily Wire previously reported, Jabola-Carolus’ other claim – about the coronavirus being more devastating to women – is also a form of sexism. She at least acknowledges the men are more likely to die from the virus, but gives a blanket statement that women are hurt more. Women are more likely to choose lower level health care work, placing them on the front lines of the virus. The fact that they are on the front lines yet less likely to die should tell Jabola-Carolus something about her worldview.

It appears her statement is along the lines of Hillary Clinton’s 1998 claim that “women have always been the primary victims of war” because even though men were dying, the women were losing those men, making them the real victims.

Another policy proposed by the commission is to further raise property taxes and corporate taxes “once the recession ends.” This will ultimately hurt low-income women who own their own home and the corporate taxes will be passed on to the workers. It’s yet another policy in this proposal that ultimately hurts women.

The proposal also brings up gender-based domestic violence without acknowledging that men can be victims, too, and are often shamed for admitting they have been hit by their wives or girlfriends and lack any services that could help them.

Another proposal seeks to waive COVID-19 testing fees (which is fine) and specifically mentions waiving those fees for incarcerated women. What about incarcerated men? Prisons have been releasing inmates (who are mostly men) over coronavirus fears, yet this proposal would only benefit women. Further, the proposed economic plan elevates incarcerated women over incarcerated men for no reason. It requests a “program specifically aimed at ensuring green jobs go to women is needed, including special programs for women who are in recovery from incarceration.”

“In recovery from incarceration?” Did they or did they not commit a crime?

Later in the proposal, the commission requests free personal protective equipment to at-risk people, “especially incarcerated women.” As if incarcerated men aren’t also at risk. The commission also wants special mental health programs for incarcerated women without mentioning incarcerated men.

This is what a proposal from the commission on women looks like. It’s just a proposal, meaning the legislature doesn’t have to even consider it, but it’s a frightening document from a government commission that blatantly and unabashedly promotes women over men to the detriment of both sexes.

Chicago Sees Deadliest Memorial Day Weekend In Years Amid Coronavirus Lockdown

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 16:38

Chicago saw its deadliest Memorial Day weekend in years this weekend, even though a coronavirus-related lockdown is still in effect and will continue to be in effect until the end of May.

Gun violence typically ticks up in the city as the weather warms up, and Memorial Day weekend is often the start of a brutal and violent summer, tinged with gang violence on Chicago’s south and west sides. This year has been no exception; according to public television station WTTW, homicides and gun violence are on the upswing in the city, even though most of the city’s recreational activities are shut down to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus and the city’s residents are under a strict stay-at-home order.

The Chicago Sun-Times reports that Friday and Saturday of Memorial Day weekend saw 9 people killed and 27 more injured in a rash of gun violence.

“Memorial Day weekend has seen at least 36 people shot so far across Chicago, nine of them fatally,” the Sun-Times reported early Monday. “The weekend’s death toll has already surpassed last Memorial Day weekend, during which seven people were killed and 34 others were injured.”

The dead include a 16-year-old named Darnell Fisher, who was shot in the chest and arm while outside Saturday night.

The city, which recently got a new chief of police, says its prepared to take on what is likely to be a violent summer, and “multiple city agencies Friday announced the opening of a ‘Summer Operations Center’ in an effort to curb violence ahead of the holiday weekend.”

So far, though, despite their efforts, Chicago has seen the most people shot and killed on Memorial Day weekend since the same weekend in 2016, which set a record for violence with nearly 70 people shot, per the Chicago Tribune.

The weekend’s incidents are enough to leave Chicago’s violence prevention advocates concerned that the city is actually dealing with twin pandemics: one of COVID-19 and one of gun violence.

“It’s like a double whammy. We are catching it double. We have the virus and the violence to worry about,” one outreach worker told TIME Magazine. “It’s just an uphill battle.”

City lockdown orders have done little to curb the violence. In fact, TIME reports, while overall crime has ticked down during the coronavirus pandemic, gun violence has actually ticked up in recent weeks, besting even last year’s non-lockdown numbers.

“In the week before the stay-at-home order was announced, 25 shootings were recorded in Chicago,” the magazine said in late April. “In the first week since, there were 41 shootings; in the second week, there were 40. (In 2019, the same period — March 30 to April 5 — saw 28 shootings.)”

Chicago mayor Lori Lightfoot cautioned on Friday that if conditions in Chicago do not improve, the lockdown will continue past May 28, the deadline given by Illinois’ Democrat governor J.B. Pritzker for the state to move into “Phase 3,” where most restaurants and retail outlets can resume service.

A Man Tried To Attack North Carolina Churchgoers With A Knife. An Officer Took Him down.

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 16:27

Church attendees in North Carolina on Sunday were shocked when a man wielding a knife disrupted their outdoor services.

Police were called to the scene and a sheriff’s deputy shot and wounded the man, The New York Post reported.

More from the Post:

Investigators were trying to determine why the man, whose injuries didn’t appear life-threatening, interrupted the service outside Oak Grove Baptist Church in Waxhaw, North Carolina, said Deputy Tony Underwood, a spokesman for the Union County Sheriff’s Office.

Underwood said the man lives across the road from the church and, from a driveway about 200 yards (182 meters) from the outdoor service, had been shouting obscenities at congregation members on Sunday and on previous occasions. Investigators suspect the man was upset about the noise from the outdoor service, according to Underwood.

“We don’t know exactly what the gentleman was upset about,” Underwood told the outlet. “We think it’s the noise, but we’re not exactly sure.”

Deputies struggled to subdue the knife-wielding man, the Post reported, and had to resort to using tasers. “The armed male continued fighting and a deputy eventually fired rounds from his service weapon striking the male,” said a statement from the sheriff’s office.

The suspect was wounded and taken to a hospital in Charlotte, North Carolina where he was treated for his injuries, which are reportedly not serious. The two deputies who struggled with the man also received minor injuries and were treated. Because an officer fired a gun, the Post reported, the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.

Churches were exempted from North Carolina’s restrictions on gatherings amid the coronavirus pandemic. Gov. Roy Cooper (D-NC) had previously tried to limit indoor worship services, the Post reported, but a federal judge ruled against the limits after conservative Christian leaders sued. The group said the restrictions violated their constitutional rights to worship. The Waxhaw church where the confrontation happened is set to resume indoor worship services on May 31. Currently, churchgoers can attend services in person or watch them on Facebook or listen in on a conference call.

Another attack on a house of worship occurred recently in Mississippi when a church that was suing the city government burned down in what is believed to be an arson. The Daily Wire’s Amanda Prestigiacomo previously reported that the church, the First Pentecostal Church of Holly Springs, had defied stay-at-home orders to remain open. A message was spray painted on the church parking lot that read: “I Bet you stay home now you hypokrits” [sic]. There was allegedly an explosion in the back of the church that helped destroy the church, which had been set on fire and spray painted with graffiti. Investigators are looking into the fire as a potential arson.

California Church Asks Supreme Court To Take Action Against Gov. Newsom’s Lockdown Order

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 16:20

A California church has appealed to the Supreme Court for relief from Gov. Gavin Newsom’s lockdown order.

South Bay United Pentecostal Church and Bishop Arthur Hodges appealed a lawsuit against Newsom to the High Court on Sunday after a panel on the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals shot down the church’s request, according to Politico.

The 9th Circuit ruled 2-1 against the church on Friday, with the majority arguing that the pandemic emergency warranted that the courts step back from determining whether the civil rights of certain groups were being violated by Newsom’s lockdown order.

“We’re dealing here with a highly contagious and often fatal disease for which there presently is no known cure,’” Judges Barry Silverman and Jacqueline Nguyen wrote according to Politico. “In the words of Justice Robert Jackson, if a ‘court does not temper its doctrinaire logic with a little practical wisdom, it will convert the constitutional Bill of Rights into a suicide pact.’”

The court’s decision came down the same day the Trump administration told governors to deem churches and other houses of worship essential. While President Trump does not have the authority to deem religious services essential across the U.S., his Justice Department can back lawsuits brought by religious institutions against states’ lockdown orders.

On Tuesday, the DOJ sent a letter to Newsom warning that his lockdown order and strategy for reopening discriminated against houses of worship. DOJ assistant attorney general Eric Dreiband said that Newsom’s lockdown arbitrarily allows some businesses to stay open “regardless of whether the product they are selling and shipping are life-preserving products or not.” Dreiband also pointed out that while a variety of stores and offices are allowed to open in Phase 2 of Newsom’s reopening plan, religious services are banned until Phase 3.

“This facially discriminates against religious exercise,” Dreiband wrote. “California has not shown why interactions in offices and studios of the entertainment industry, and in-person operations to facilitate nonessential ecommerce, are included on the list as being allowed with social distancing where telework is not practical, while gatherings with social distancing for purposes of religious worship are forbidden, regardless of whether remote worship is practical or not.”

“Simply put, there is no pandemic exception to the U.S. Constitution and its Bill of Rights,” Dreiband added.

California and Newsom are facing multiple lawsuits from churches that are uniting against his lockdown strategy. Hundreds of pastors have signed an open letter committing to opening their churches in protest of the order on May 31.

“The indefinite nature of the restrictions on faith-based meetings is in violation of the very principles this country was founded upon,” Robert Tyler, president of Advocates for Faith and Freedom, wrote in a letter signed by 1,200 pastors. “We agree that the government has a legitimate interest in preventing the spread of COVID- 19, but that interest cannot go unchecked.”

‘Perverted Pyramid Scheme’: New Jeffrey Epstein Documentary Reveals He Allegedly Paid Women To Bring Him More Victims

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 15:56

A new documentary claims convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein paid his young female victims to find him new victims.

The four-part docuseries, “Jeffrey Epstein: Filthy Rich,” will premiere on Netflix starting Wednesday. A new trailer revealed the alarming information, The New York Post reported. A voiceover says Epstein offered his young victims cash to bring him new victims in an “ever-revolving door of girls.”

“These girls brought other girls too,” the voiceover said.

The Post referred to it as “a perverted pyramid scheme” and reported that Haley Robson spoke to filmmakers about the payments. The Sun reported that Robson told filmmakers she rebuffed Epstein’s advances, but he said he would pay her $200 to bring some of her friends over to meet him. She estimated that she recruited about 24 underage girls to visit Epstein, mostly her friends and classmates.

“It’s a trade. And it goes on and on and on,” Robson said in the trailer.

More from The Sun:

Prosecutors said he amassed a “vast network” of girls as young as 14 who he would lure to his homes and sexually abuse.

The documentary goes into detail about how Epstein was able to lure girls to abuse and hears from victims who say they were paid to recruit other victims.

It details how a pattern emerged of one friend recruiting two friends who in turn recruited another two friends.

Attorney Brad Edwards represents victim Courtney Wild, who he met after the FBI started investigating Epstein, and started building a case against the sex offender.

Edwards explained in the documentary that he and his team created a flow chart of all Epstein’s victims. He said it took 30 days to complete but even then they suspect it could be five times larger than what was initially created.

“We had to prove that this pyramid of underage girls in Palm Beach was true,” Edwards said. “It didn’t start from just a random underage girl walking into the house.”

Epstein committed suicide in prison last August. His close friend, Ghislaine Maxwell, has been accused of procuring underage girls for the multimillionaire and even sexually abusing them. As The Daily Wire previously reported, Maxwell won’t have to answer questions as part of a civil suit against her just yet. Her attorneys successfully argued that the civil suit should wait until after the criminal investigation into Maxwell’s complicity with Epstein was complete.

The Post reported over the weekend that Maxwell allegedly “trolled trailer parks to find girls for pedophile pal Jeffrey Epstein to fuel his insatiable sexual appetite,” according o Prince Andrew’s cousin. The cousin made the claims as part of different Epstein documentary set to air Monday on Investigation Discovery.

WATCH: CNN Analyst Calls Trump A Hypocrite For Pushing Reopening Of Churches But Skipping Church On Sunday

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 15:19

On Monday morning, CNN took a shot at President Trump, with a CNN political analyst essentially labeling him a hypocrite because he has pushed for churches to reopen, deeming them essential, but did not attend church on Sunday. CNN senior political analyst John Avlon said Trump playing golf on Sunday instead of going to church was “more of the ‘do as I say, not as I do’ presidency.”

On Friday, President Trump stated at a press conference:

At my direction, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is issuing guidance for communities of faith. I want to thank Dr. Redfield and the CDC for their work on this matter and all the other work they’ve been doing over the past what now seems like a long period of time. Today I’m identifying houses of worship, churches, synagogue and mosques as essential places that provide essential services. Some governors have deemed liquor stores and abortion clinics as essential, but have left out churches and other houses of worship. It’s not right. So I’m correcting this injustice and calling houses of worship essential. I call upon governors to allow our churches and places of worship to open right now.

As Mark Finkelstein of Newsbusters reportsNew Day” co-host Alisyn Camerota and Avlon had this exchange on Monday morning:

Camerota: Joining us now is CNN senior political analyst John Avlon. John, great to see you. There are a few interesting things about the president choosing to play golf yesterday. And one is, that over the past week, he’s been very interested in churches. He’s been very interested in churches reopening. He’s encouraged them to do so, even against the advice of medical experts. But then, yesterday, he didn’t go to church. He played golf. So, how do we process that?

Avlon: Well, it’s just more of the “do as I say, not as I do” presidency. But I think it shows how he uses — he’s willing to use religion as a political weapon, but not walk the walk. And that’s because he’s never particularly been a person of faith, even though he’s very popular among evangelicals.

Finkelstein noted, “The free exercise of religion also implies the right not to practice one. And so, contrary to Avlon’s claim, there was no ‘walk to walk.’ There was nothing hypocritical about President Trump choosing not to attend church over the weekend.”

Finkelstein took note on Saturday of MSNBC’s Ali Velshi pontificating that Trump declaring houses of worship essential was somehow problematic regarding the separation of church and state, saying, “Regardless of how that plays with separation of church and state, and even if the president has no authority to issue such a decree, Trump’s insistence on a rushed reopening flies in the face of what public health experts continue to advise: that this is not a time to become complacent.” Finkelstein pointed out the ridiculousness of that assertion because the First Amendment bans the establishment of an official state religion and Trump spoke of all houses of worship, not just one.

Flynn Judge Retains D.C. Attorney To Justify Decision To Keep Case Open, Report Says

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 15:06

A federal judge has hired a high-powered attorney after refusing to dismiss charges against former national security adviser Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn after the Justice Department requested to drop the case.

U.S. District Court Judge Emmet Sullivan retained Washington D.C. lawyer Beth Wilkinson to argue in front of a federal appeals court why Sullivan was right to reexamine Flynn’s case before dropping the charges, a source told The Washington Post. A panel on the D.C. Court of Appeals has demanded that Sullivan explain his decision to reject the DOJ request.

Wilkinson has represented a series of prominent officials in high-stakes legal battles. She represented Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his Senate confirmation battle when several women made unsubstantiated accusations of sexual assault against him.

FBI Director Christopher Wray ordered an internal investigation into the Flynn case that will determine whether any FBI agents or officials abused their powers in probing Flynn, according to Fox News.

“Although the FBI does not have the prosecutorial authority to bring a criminal case, the Inspection Division can and will evaluate whether any current onboard employees engaged in actions that might warrant disciplinary measures,” the FBI announced on Friday.

The DOJ motion to drop its case against Flynn on May 7 after court documents unsealed in April revealed that the FBI’s top brass had interfered in an FBI probe into Flynn in January 2017 to hold the case open despite having little, if any, reason to do so. The documents also indicated that FBI officials sought to trap Flynn in a Jan. 24, 2017 interview into either lying to federal agents or admitting to breaking an obscure 1799 law. Flynn pleaded guilty to lying to the FBI in December 2017, but asked to rescind his guilty plea earlier this year.

After Sullivan refused to drop the case, the judge took the unusual step of asking a retired federal judge to essentially prosecute a case that Attorney General William Barr felt lacked enough evidence to make. Sullivan appointed John Gleeson, a former mafia prosecutor, to pursue the charges against Flynn in the absence of the DOJ’s team. Gleeson is also weighing whether Flynn should be charged with perjury for proclaiming innocence after already pleading guilty.

Flynn’s attorney Sydney Powell blasted Sullivan’s decision to keep the case against Flynn open after the Justice Department decided to stop prosecuting the case.

“This travesty of justice has already consumed three or more years of an innocent man’s life — and that of his entire family. No further delay should be tolerated or any further expense caused to him and his defense,” Powell wrote in a court filing. “This Court should enter the order proposed by the government immediately.”

Trump Vs. China Escalates: WH Threatens Sanctions Amid Protest Crackdown, Hong Kong ‘Take-Over’

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 14:57

In response to China’s aggressive move to impose a new national security law on Hong Kong that would further the Chinese Communist Party’s control of what is supposed to be an independent legal system, the Trump administration is now publicly threatening to impose economic sanctions on both Hong Kong and China.

In an appearance on NBC’s “Meet the Press” on Sunday, White House national security adviser Robert O’Brien said the administration is likely to revoke Hong Kong’s special status in response to China’s increased interference in the administrative region and impose sanctions, what he suggested would be a “real blow” to the communist regime.

As The Daily Wire reported, Chinese authorities announced on Friday a new law cracking down on what the regime deems acts of “sedition” or “subversion.” The law would empower Hong Kong law enforcement to arrest residents connected to Hong Kong’s pro-democracy, anti-China movement at the behest of the Chinese government, effectively bypassing Hong Kong’s independent legislature and chief executive.

The end of the “one country, two systems” framework — established when Hong Kong was released by the United Kingdom in 1997 — would also end Hong Kong’s role as a “financial center” in the region, O’Brien suggested on Sunday. If China is effectively taking over the administrative region, the U.S. is likely to revoke Hong Kong’s special status and impose sanctions, O’Brien warned.

Citing what he predicts will be a “brain drain” in the region as members of Hong Kong’s financial community move out of the area, O’Brien said he doesn’t see how Hong Kong’s current status as an economic center will hold. “It’s hard to see how Hong Kong could remain the Asian financial center that it’s become if China takes over,” said O’Brien, as reported by Axios.

“One reason that [members of the financial community] came to Hong Kong is because there was the rule of law there, there was a free enterprise system, there was a capitalist system, there was democracy and local legislative elections,” the national security adviser explained. “If all those things go away, I’m not sure how the financial community can stay there.”

Asked if sanctions will significantly impact China, O’Brien noted that the communist regime country is “dependent on capital from the rest of the world” and “liquidity in financial markets.”

“If they lose access of that through Hong Kong, that’s a real blow to Xi Jinping and the Chinese Communist Party,” he said.

China’s moves to further violate Hong Kong’s independence comes amid increased pushback from pro-Democracy protesters in the region.

“As Hong Kong suffered through lockdowns, there were indications that China would use the pandemic as cover for more intensive missions to undermine the island democracy and impose Chinese authority,” The Daily Wire reported Sunday. Overnight Saturday and into Sunday, protests broke out, thousands of protesters taking to the streets of Hong Kong. In response, authorities promptly and aggressively cracked down, police firing tear gas into the crowds, citing protesters’ failure to receive official authorization amid the city’s “social distancing” restrictions.

Trump Strong-Arms Democrat NC Governor On Shutdown ‘Guarantee’: We’ll Pull Economy-Boosting GOP Convention

President Trump demanded on Monday that North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper (D) make a decision as soon as possible about his state’s lockdown orders for the coming months, threatening to pull the Republican National Convention — scheduled to take place in Charlotte the week of August 24 and expected to draw more than 50,000 participants — if he fails to provide Republicans a “guarantee” that they will be able to hold the convention as planned. Pulling the convention from the state, Trump reminded Cooper, would have a significant economic impact.

“I love the Great State of North Carolina, so much so that I insisted on having the Republican National Convention in Charlotte at the end of August,” Trump said a series of tweets Monday. “Unfortunately, Democrat Governor [Roy Cooper] is still in Shutdown mood [and] unable to guarantee that by August we will be allowed full attendance in the Arena.”

“In other words, we would be spending millions of dollars building the Arena to a very high standard without even knowing if the Democrat Governor would allow the Republican Party to fully occupy the space,” Trump emphasized. “Plans are being made by many thousands of enthusiastic Republicans, and others, to head to beautiful North Carolina in August.”

“They must be immediately given an answer by the Governor as to whether or not the space will be allowed to be fully occupied,” said Trump. If Cooper fails to offer Republicans a “guarantee” that they will be able to hold the convention as planned, he warned, they’ll be “reluctantly forced” to go elsewhere. “If not, we will be reluctantly forced to find, with all of the jobs and economic development it brings, another Republican National Convention site.”

“This is not something I want to do,” he concluded. “Thank you, and I LOVE the people of North Carolina!”

Trump’s comments follow recent statements by RNC organizers that they fully intend to hold the event as planned. As reported by WCNC Charlotte, the event organizers said during a recent virtual press conference that they are moving “full steam ahead” on the convention but stressed that some key decisions are still hinging on COVID-19-related developments.

“Officials said it’s too soon to make any definitive call on what they’ll do. With 50,000 expected visitors coming to Charlotte for the RNC, that’s 50,000 people who will need food, hotel rooms and transportation,” WCNC reported Monday.

Marcia Lee Kelly, president and CEO of the 2020 Republican convention in Charlotte, said during the press conference that delegates may be asked to wear masks inside the venue, WCNC notes.

Like Trump, Kelly emphasized the economic impact of the convention, which will be held in Charlotte’s Spectrum Center, describing it as “an economic catalyst for the Charlotte community,” WCNC reports.

Biden Shames Trump For Golfing; Trump Swings Back: He Left Out Some Key Facts

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 12:39

Over Memorial Day weekend, President Trump hit the links for a round of golf, an outing that took place while the total official count for COVID-19-related deaths in the U.S. neared 100,000. Presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden promptly “pounced,” posting a campaign ad portraying Trump as callously indulging in the leisurely sport while Americans die because of his supposed mismanagement of the crisis. Trump has since responded by highlighting a few facts Biden’s ad left out.

“Nearly 100,000 lives have been lost, and tens of millions are out of work. Meanwhile, the president spent his day golfing,” Biden tweeted Saturday along with a 30-second ad featuring Trump golfing at his private club in Virginia juxtaposed with eerie pandemic footage amid dramatic music.

Biden followed up that post with another golf-themed tweet on Sunday.

“The presidency is about a lot more than tweeting from your golf cart,” wrote Biden. “It requires taking on the ultimate responsibility for the biggest decisions in the world. Donald Trump simply wasn’t prepared for that. I promise you I will be.”

The golf tweets followed another Memorial Weekend post by Biden accusing Trump of fatally mishandling the COVID-19 pandemic.

“The hard truth is Donald Trump ignored the warnings of health experts and intelligence agencies, downplayed the threat COVID-19 posed, and failed to take the action needed to combat the outbreak,” Biden tweeted Saturday. “It’s one of the greatest failures of presidential leadership in our history.

President Trump responded to the digs in a pair of posts on Sunday in which he noted some key context left out of the Biden ad, including an infamous Obama moment.

“Sleepy Joe’s representatives have just put out an ad saying that I went to play golf (exercise) today. They think I should stay in the White House at all times,” wrote Trump, making sure to highlight that doctors overwhelmingly encourage Americans even in the most severely “locked down” areas to get outside to exercise.

“What they didn’t say is that it’s the first time I’ve played golf in almost 3 months, that Biden was constantly vacationing, relaxing & making shady deals with other countries,” Trump added.

Also left out of the video, said Trump, was “that Barack [Obama] was always playing golf, doing much of his traveling in a fume spewing 747 to play golf in Hawaii – Once even teeing off immediately after announcing the gruesome death of a great young man by ISIS!”

…vacationing, relaxing & making shady deals with other countries, & that Barack was always playing golf, doing much of his traveling in a fume spewing 747 to play golf in Hawaii – Once even teeing off immediately after announcing the gruesome death of a great young man by ISIS!

— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 25, 2020

Trump’s ISIS comment was a reference to an infamous game of golf in 2014 by then-President Obama after he had just gotten off the phone with the parents of James Foley, who was murdered by ISIS terrorists. In a “conservatives pounce” piece titled “A Terrorist Horror, Then Golf: Incongruity Fuels Obama Critics,” the left-leaning New York Times framed the incident thusly:

He had just hung up the telephone with the devastated parents before heading in front of the cameras. Unusually emotional, President Obama declared himself “heartbroken” by the brutal murder of an American journalist, James Foley, and vowed to “be relentless” against Islamic radicals threatening to kill another American.

But as soon as the cameras went off, Mr. Obama headed to his favorite golf course on Martha’s Vineyard, where he is on vacation, seemingly able to put the savagery out of his mind. He spent the rest of the afternoon on the links even as a firestorm of criticism erupted over what many saw as a callous indifference to the slaughter he had just condemned.

GOP Sues CA Gov. Newsom Over Vote-By-Mail Ballots: ‘Illegal Power Grab’

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 11:35

On Sunday, the Republican National Committee, National Republican Congressional Committee and California Republican Party sued California Governor Gavin Newsom and California Secretary of State Alex Padilla, declaring the executive order that demanded all registered voters in the state receive vote-by-mail ballots an “illegal power grab” and a “recipe for disaster.”

According to Fox News, Newsom’s order would enable inactive voters, including those who have died or moved, to receive vote-by-mail ballots. On May 8, Newsom issued an executive order that said every registered voter would receive a vote-by-mail ballot; Padilla tweeted, “BIG ELECTION NEWS: Every California voter will receive a vote-by-mail ballot for November’s election — and yes, we’ll do our best to maintain safe, in-person voting. This is great for public health, voting rights, and participation in the #2020 election.”

— Alex Padilla (@AlexPadilla4CA) May 8, 2020

“Registered voters currently living in California will receive a ballot 29 days prior to Election Day. Military members and voters living abroad will get their ballots in the mail 45 days before Election Day,” CBS News reported.

In response, the GOP filed a complaint, which reads in part:

In a direct usurpation of the legislature’s authority, Governor Newsom issued an executive order purporting to rewrite the entire election code for the November 2020 election. This brazen power grab was not authorized by state law and violates both the Elections Clause and Electors Clause of the U.S. Constitution. The Governor’s Order is invalid and must be enjoined.

Moreover, in his haste, the Governor created a system that will violate eligible citizens’ right to vote. By ordering that vote-by-mail ballots be automatically sent to every registered voter — including inactive voters, voters with invalid registrations, voters who have moved, voters who have died, and voters who don’t want a ballot — he has created a recipe for disaster. No State that regularly conducts statewide all-mail elections automatically mails ballots to inactive voters because it invites fraud, coercion, theft, and otherwise illegitimate voting. Fraudulent and invalid votes dilute the votes of honest citizens and deprive them of their right to vote in violation of the Fourteenth Amendment.

Finally, the Governor reserved for himself the sole discretion to choose if and where in-person voting will occur. Such unbridled discretion, which leads to arbitrary and disparate treatment of individual voters, violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.

RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel stated, “Democrats continue to use this pandemic as a ploy to implement their partisan election agenda, and Governor Newsom’s executive order is the latest direct assault on the integrity of our elections. Newsom’s illegal power grab is a recipe for disaster that would destroy the confidence Californians deserve to have in the security of their vote.”

Padilla countered, “Expanding vote-by-mail during a pandemic is not a partisan issue — it’s a moral imperative to protect voting rights and public safety. Vote-by-mail has been used safely and effectively in red, blue, and purple states for years. This lawsuit is just another part of Trump’s political smear campaign against voting by mail. We will not let this virus be exploited for voter suppression.”

Ilhan Omar Believes Biden Accuser Tara Reade: ‘Justice Can Be Delayed, But Should Never Be Denied’

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 11:29

As most Democratic leaders and members of the mainstream media continue to treat Joe Biden accuser Tara Reade far differently than they did Kavanaugh accuser Christine Blasey Ford, far-left Congresswoman Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has declared that she believes Reade.

Speaking with the U.K.’s Sunday Times, Omar said that justice should not be “denied” regarding Reade’s allegation against Biden.

“I do believe Reade,” said Omar. “Justice can be delayed, but should never be denied.”

Omar also said that Biden would not be the nominee if she were the one making the final decision.

Earlier this month, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), a member of the radical “Squad” along with Omar, said that Tara Reade’s allegation against Biden is not “clear cut” while conceding that “something has happened” between the two.

“There have been investigative journalists that have corroborated certain aspects of her account – that is undeniable – [and] have raised questions about other aspects of her account,” Ocasio-Cortez told NPR. “It certainly seems as though something has happened. I’m not sure… Frankly, this is a messy moment, and I think we need to acknowledge that – that it is not clear-cut.”

Ocasio-Cortez added that she does not believe Tara Reade to be a political actor.

“While a lot of folks, again, are trying to jump to the political implications, she has never explicitly said ‘don’t support Joe Biden,’” Ocasio-Cortez said. “She hasn’t explicitly said anything in terms of a political remedy that she wants. If anything, it simply sounds like she wants to be heard.”

However, other prominent Democrats, including the women on Biden’s shortlist to become his running mate, have either dismissed Reade’s claims or defended Joe Biden outright. Some progressives, such as author Linda Hirshman, have argued people should vote for Joe Biden despite the credibility of Reade’s claims:

All major Democratic Party figures have indicated they’re not budging on the presumptive nominee, and the transaction costs of replacing him would be suicidal. Barring some miracle, it’s going to be Mr. Biden.

So what is the greatest good or the greatest harm? Mr. Biden, and the Democrats he may carry with him into government, are likely to do more good for women and the nation than his competition, the worst president in the history of the Republic. Compared with the good Mr. Biden can do, the cost of dismissing Tara Reade — and, worse, weakening the voices of future survivors — is worth it.

In March, Reade claimed that then-Senator Joe Biden sexually assaulted her while she served as an aide in his Senate offices during the Clinton administration. She has since detailed her account in multiple interviews and filed a criminal complaint against the former vice president with the Washington, D.C., police department. A former neighbor of Reade and Reade’s brother have both publicly stated that Reade told them of the alleged assault in the 1990s. Recently surfaced evidence also suggests that Reade’s mother called in to CNN’s Larry King in the 1990s to complain about a prominent senator with whom her daughter had “problems.”

Earlier this month, the Associated Press reported that two other people, both of whom wished to remain anonymous, said that Reade spoke of Biden’s behavior prior to going public. Follow that, new evidence emerged that appeared to support Reade’s claim when the San Louis Obispo Tribune reported on court documents from 1996 that revealed she had complained to her then-husband about sexual harassment from someone in Biden’s office in 1993.

“The declaration — exclusively obtained by The Tribune in San Luis Obispo, California — does not say Biden committed the harassment nor does it mention Reade’s more recent allegations of sexual assault,” reported the outlet. “Reade’s then-husband Theodore Dronen wrote the court declaration. Dronen at the time was contesting a restraining order Reade filed against him days after he filed for divorce, Superior Court records show.”

Democrat Sheila Jackson Lee Claims That Biden Did Not Really Make Bigoted ‘You Ain’t Black’ Remark

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 03:17

Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-TX) falsely suggested late last week that presumptive Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden did not really make his “you ain’t black” remark that was widely condemned as racist and arrogant.

During an interview on “The Breakfast Club” with co-host Charlamagne Tha God, Biden said, “If you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.”

Lee made the false claim during an appearance on Fox News when asked about the remark during an interview with anchor Bret Baier.

“I mean, you would say to somebody in your district who’s an African American, who perhaps enjoyed the historically low African American unemployment, the support for historically black colleges and universities, the prison reform and justice reform, and they said, you know what, I’m going to vote for Donald Trump,” Baier said. “They are not less black tonight, right?”

“I don’t believe anyone who saw that exchange would in any way suggest that anyone is blacker, blackest, or less black,” Lee claimed. “That exchange was in jest, but on second thought, it could have been spoken differently.”

“And what I would say to you is that that was not what the vice president said in terms of those words,” Lee falsely claimed.

Baier concluded the segment by saying, “He did say what he said, and he apologized.”

TRANSCRIPT:

BRET BAIER, FNC ANCHOR: Let’s get some balanced reaction to all of this, the Biden comment. Texas Democratic Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee joins us tonight.

Congresswoman, thanks for being here. I want to get your reaction to that story, the comment today, what you think about it.

REP. SHEILA JACKSON LEE (D-TX): Well, I’m going to take off my mask. I want everybody to know that we should be wearing masks, but I’m not near someone for six feet, so I’m going to go ahead and take it off. Good to be with you.

The good news is I am delighted that the vice president was on “The Breakfast Club,” it is a dynamic show with a very probative questioning host. That was the right thing to do.

Then as well, I think the right thing to do was to own up that it might not have been as funny as we might have thought originally, meaning the vice president, because it was done in jest, and to be able to match his record up against his opponent.

Any day I believe he’ll come out with 100 percent – the vice president knows that he can’t take any community for granted, and particularly the African-American community.

I don’t believe he, in any way, is insensitive to the needs of this community, particularly in what we’re going through right now with COVID-19, the enormous amount of mortality rates in our community.

So I believe he’s answered over the last 24 hours that he’s going to fight every single day to earn the vote of every single African-American of all generations, and that’s the way a presidential candidate should put their candidacy forward.

BAIER: Yes, Congresswoman, I’m sure you’ve seen some of the reaction that some folks didn’t think it was a joke and took offense to it, including Bob Johnson, the founder of Black Entertainment Television, who is also a big finance person for Hillary Clinton, as you well know, said this, “Vice President Biden’s statement today represents the arrogant and out-of-touch attitude of a paternalistic white candidate who has the audacity to tell black people, the descendents of slaves, that they are not black unless they vote for him.

This proves unequivocally that the Democratic nominee believes that black people owe him their vote without question; even though, we as black people know it is exactly the opposite. He should spend the rest of his campaign apologizing to every black person he meets.”

Your reaction to Bob Johnson?

JACKSON LEE: Well, my reaction is that Bob Johnson is a friend. I appreciate and respect his analysis and also his contributions to the economic engine of wealth in this nation. And there have been many tweets and comments that have been said about this.

But I maintain that the vice president is realistically aware that he has to work every single day to get every American’s vote, and particularly in the African-American community.

What I like about the vice president is I don’t have to look for his record, his record is present. And he has already indicated that one of his chief responsibilities and concerns is to close the wealth gap between everyone else and the African-American community, to boost the educational opportunities and close that horrible gap, and to deal with health disparities — which reflects, again, in the mortality rates of COVID-19, and the number of people that are not tested in the communities without resources.

So this is a great opportunity for the vice president to show his record and to contrast it with an individual, his opponent, that has called African countries s-hole countries, that have not hired any African-Americans, and finally I would say that has made it a point of targeting with wrong words, African-American women.

BAIER: But Congresswoman, last thing, quickly. I mean, you would say to somebody in your district who’s an African-American, who perhaps enjoyed the historically low African-American unemployment, the support for historically black colleges and universities, the prison reform and justice reform, and they said, you know what, I’m going to vote for Donald Trump. They are not less black tonight, right?

JACKSON LEE: I don’t believe anyone who saw that exchange would in any way suggest that anyone is blacker, blackest, or less black. That exchange was in jest, but on second thought, it could have been spoken differently.

But I think African-Americans are truly one of the most astute political groups in this nation, and they know what is best for them, their children, their families, their elders – and as relates to the generational divide, if you will, or the unity of such, those who are millennials are clearly astute.

And what I would say to you is that that was not what the vice president said in terms of those words, and if we had listened to the earlier conversation we would know that the vice president wants to put his record forward.

He knows that everyone has their own historical moral standing on the color of their skin, but he also said he hopes that people don’t have to just vote on the color of their skin, and he also believes —

BAIER: Yes.

JACKSON LEE: — in the history of our people. And I don’t believe in anyway that he undermined who we are and what we are.

Look, I happen to be someone who was introduced — legislation

BAIER: Congresswoman. Yes, we really appreciate your time. Thank you very much.

He did say what he said, and he apologized.

And we appreciate you coming on the show. You’re welcome any time.

JACKSON LEE: Thank you.

BAIER: Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee.

Nobel Laureate Scientist: Lockdown ‘May Have’ Cost More Lives Than It Saved, Damage Far Worse Than Positives

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 02:31

A Nobel Prize winning scientist, who correctly predicted in the early days of the pandemic that the initial models were overestimating how bad the outbreak would be, said over the weekend that he believes that the lockdown may end up costing more lives than it saved, and that the economic devastation from the lockdown will outweigh the lives that were lost.

The Telegraph reported:

Michael Levitt, a Stanford University professor who correctly predicted the initial trajectory of the pandemic, sent messages to Professor Neil Ferguson in March telling the influential government advisor he had over-estimated the potential death toll by “10 or 12 times.”

The Imperial College professor’s modelling, a major factor in the Government’s apparent abandoning of a so-called herd-immunity policy, was part of an unnecessary “panic virus” which spread among global political leaders, Prof Levitt now tells the Telegraph.

“I think lockdown saved no lives,” Levitt said, adding that social distancing measures, hygiene, and wearing masks should have been sufficient. “I think it may have cost lives. It will have saved a few road accident lives – things like that – but social damage – domestic abuse, divorces, alcoholism – has been extreme. And then you have those who were not treated for other conditions.”

“I think that the real virus was the panic virus,” Levitt continued. “For reasons that were not clear to me, I think the leaders panicked and the people panicked and I think there was a huge lack of discussion.”

“I think the lockdown will cause much more damage than the deaths saved,” Levitt added. “The problem with epidemiologists is that they feel their job is to frighten people into lockdown, social distancing. So you say ‘there’s going to be a million deaths’ and when there are only 25,000 you say ‘it’s good you listened to my advice’. This happened with Ebola and bird flu. It’s just part of the madness.”

Imperial College epidemiologist Professor Ferguson, who had claimed that 500,000 people in the U.K. would die without a lockdown, resigned in disgrace earlier this month after he was caught breaking the quarantine that he had advocated for to allegedly have an affair with a married woman.

Politico reported:

A government spokesman confirmed Tuesday that Neil Ferguson had resigned from the government’s Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies (SAGE), after the Telegraph reported he had received at least two visits from his married lover and therefore broken social distancing rules.

“I accept I made an error of judgment and took the wrong course of action,” Ferguson said. “I have therefore stepped back from my involvement in Sage.”

David Richards, co-founder of British data technology company WANdisco, told the Daily Telegraph, that the model created by Ferguson was a “buggy mess that looks more like a bowl of angel hair pasta than a finely tuned piece of programming.”

Richards added, ““In our commercial reality, we would fire anyone for developing code like this and any business that relied on it to produce software for sale would likely go bust.”

China Warns U.S.: ‘Appreciate Great Sensitivity’ Of Taiwan Question. Cruz: ‘Appreciate The Great Sensitivity Of 343k People Dead’

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 02:26

On Sunday morning a spokesperson for the Foreign Ministry of Communist China issued a warning to the United States vis-à-vis Taiwan, citing the “great sensitivity of the Taiwan question,” advising the United States to “ditch its illusions and political calculations,” and eschew “any attempt to challenge China’s red line.”

We urge the #US side to fully appreciate the great sensitivity of the Taiwan question. We advise the US side to ditch its illusions and political calculations. We ask the US side not to make any attempt to challenge China's red line.

— Hua Chunying 华春莹 (@SpokespersonCHN) May 24, 2020

Senator Ted Cruz (R-TX), who has taken a harsh stance toward the Chinese Communist government, fired back that the Chinese government should “appreciate the great sensitivity of 343k people dead because CCP lied & covered up a damn global pandemic,” asking the Communist Chinese party not to “hide behind a fake red line of lies.”

We urge the Chinese govt to fully appreciate the great sensitivity of 343k people dead because CCP lied & covered up a damn global pandemic. We advise CCP to ditch its illusions & political calculations. We ask CCP not to make any attempt to hide behind a fake red line of lies. https://t.co/vCVDB6yCHZ

— Ted Cruz (@tedcruz) May 24, 2020

Cruz has staunchly supported the Taiwanese government for some time. In February, Cruz introduced a bill permitting Taiwanese diplomats and members of the military to display Taiwan’s flag and wear their uniform if they were conducting official business in the United States.

Cruz’s website stated of the bill, the Taiwan Symbols of Sovereignty (Taiwan SOS) Act, “This reverses the Obama administration policy, formalized in a 2015 confidential memo, prohibiting the display of the Taiwanese flag at the request of the Chinese Communist Party. These guidelines have restricted U.S. support for Taiwan, by prohibiting both the Department of State and Department of Defense from even posting such symbols on social media.”

Cruz stated, “America should not do the bidding of the Chinese Communist Party in forcing service members and diplomats of free, democratic governments to hide their flag or discard their uniforms. As China grows more hostile toward Taiwan and our friends in the region, it’s critically important for the United States and the rest of the world to stand unshakably with Taiwan. Allowing Taiwanese officials to proudly display their flag while in the United States is a step in the right direction.”

In September 2018, Cruz issued a statement cheering the Trump administration’s decision to conduct regular arms sales to Taiwan: “I am glad to see the Trump administration conducting regular arms sales to our Taiwanese allies, after many years in which the Obama administration played politics with our legal obligations to Taipei. These sales advance American national security both by empowering our allies to defend themselves and by visibly demonstrating that America stands with our friends. We should be constantly looking for ways to deepen cooperation.”

After meeting with President Tsai Ing-wen of Taiwan in January 2017, Cruz slammed the Communist Chinese government for trying to interfere with the meeting, stating:

Shortly before our meeting, the Houston congressional delegation received a curious letter from the Chinese consulate asking members of Congress not to meet with President Tsai, and to uphold the “One-China policy.” The People’s Republic of China needs to understand that in America we make decisions about meeting with visitors for ourselves. This is not about the PRC.  This is about the U.S. relationship with Taiwan, an ally we are legally bound to defend.  The Chinese do not give us veto power over those with whom they meet. We will continue to meet with anyone, including the Taiwanese, as we see fit. The U.S.-Taiwan relationship is not on the negotiating table. It is bound in statute and founded on common interests. I look forward to working with President Tsai to strengthen our partnership.

Val Demings, Biden VP Contender, Blasts Trump For Selling ‘You Ain’t Black’ T-Shirts

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 00:35

Though former Vice President Joe Biden’s “you ain’t black” comment sparked heated controversy, that does not mean he has no apologists.

Rep. Val Demings (D-FL) blasted President Trump for his “gall and nerve” to campaign off Biden’s comments by selling T-shirts and releasing targeted ads.

In an appearance on the “The Breakfast Club” on Friday, Biden sparked controversy when host Charlamagne Tha God told the former vice president to come back on his show to answer “more questions” pertaining to black American issues.

“You’ve got more questions?” Biden replied. “Well I tell you what, if you have a problem figuring out whether you’re for me or Trump, then you ain’t black.”

As reported by The Daily Wire’s Ryan Saavedra, President Trump seized the moment by launching a whole new website, attack ads, and even merchandise blasting Biden for his arrogant comments:

President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign released multiple digital ads on Friday targeting Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden on his record with the black community after Biden made what were widely deemed to be racist remarks earlier in the day.

The Trump campaign immediately announced that they were going on the offensive over Biden’s racist remark with a $1 million digital ad blitz.

The Trump campaign immediately created new merchandise for their online store highlighting Biden’s inflammatory remark, including t-shirts that state: “#YouAintBlack”.

Speaking with CNN’s “State of the Union” on Sunday, Demings said that Biden made a mistake while hitting Trump’s response to it.

“The vice president shouldn’t have said it,” Demings said, as reported by The Guardian. “But I really think the gall and the nerve of President Trump to try to use this in his campaign, he who has since day one done everything in his power, supported by his enablers, to divide this country, particularly along racial lines…”

“Look, let’s talk about race because we definitely need to, we see it in housing, we see it in voting rights, we see it in healthcare, we see it in education. Mr. President, let’s do have a serious conversation about race in America, and how about working for all people that you are supposed to represent, not just the privileged few,” Demings continued.

Though Demings did not defend Biden’s remarks, his other supporters certainly have, the worst among them being Jemele Hill of The Atlantic and Carla Hall of the Los Angeles Times.

“I don’t have a problem with the statement because he was clearly referring to this from a policy and track record standpoint. If you’re black and you support anti-black policies and positions, then that makes you …? You’re still technically black but you ain’t with us,” tweeted Jemele Hill.

“Biden and the Democratic Party are a better choice than Trump and the Republican Party,” wrote Hall. “It’s as simple and sometimes depressing as that. And not voting at all is dangerous. It only ups the possibility that Trump wins. Republicans vote, they don’t stay home. Even in a quarantine.”

Trump: Biden ‘Not Mentally Sharp Enough,’ ‘Doesn’t Know He’s Alive’

Mon, 05/25/2020 - 00:01

It’s been a weekend of Biden-bashing from all sides. On Sunday, President Trump jumped into the fray when he said that Biden’s mental incompetence goes beyond the simple “you ain’t black” gaffes and into his own self-awareness.

During an interview with WJLA, the president was asked if he could think of any qualities that might make former Vice President Joe Biden a formidable opponent in the November election; other than experience, Trump had a difficult time conjuring up any.

“Well, I would have said experience, but he doesn’t really have experience because I don’t think he remembers what he did yesterday,” Trump said, as reported by Fox News. “So how is that experience? He’s been there a long time. He was never known as a smart person.”

When host Sharyl Attkisson pressed Trump to say “one good thing” about Joe Biden, the president did not give an answer. On Biden’s weaknesses, Trump did what he usually does: troll in the most merciless of ways.

“He’s got many. I can talk about weak points all day long,” the president said before asserting that Biden is “not mentally sharp enough to be president.”

“Biden doesn’t know, I mean, he doesn’t know he’s alive,” Trump continued. “I’m against somebody. Think of it. I’m against somebody that can’t answer simple questions. I’ve never seen anything like it, but here’s what I am against. I’m against a very powerful party, the Democrats, and they can take this glass of water and say that’s your candidate.”

Question Joe Biden’s mental fitness has now become commonplace, not only among conservatives and Trump supporters but among leftists as well. Writing at Salon, Matthew Rosza argued that questioning Biden’s mental acuity is fair game and urged both him (and Trump) to be more forthcoming about it, politics aside:

We’re already seeing that with Trump’s self-absorption caused him to waste precious time America needed to prepare for the coronavirus pandemic, and one recent study estimates that 36,000 people died because of delays in lockdowns that Trump could have taken the initiative to implement. As Lee pointed out, there is an apt analogy to be found in how President Woodrow Wilson suffered a debilitating stroke with a year-and-a-half left in his second term, rendering him unable to fulfill his duties during an influenza epidemic, the delicate peacemaking tasks after World War I and America’s mission to give women the right to vote and prohibit alcohol.

Between Joe Biden’s frequent gaffes and Tara Reade’s sexual assault allegation, the Democrats have increasingly run out of selling points in favor of Joe Biden other than the fact that he’s not Trump. As Daily Wire Editor-in-Chief Ben Shapiro rightly pointed out:

How can a major party candidate win if nobody cares whether he’s even alive? Because Biden’s candidacy isn’t a referendum on Biden but on Trump: President Donald Trump is widely perceived as volatile, unstable, chaotic. Biden is perceived as somnambulant. Better a sleepwalker, many voters seem to think, than the rolling chaos of a second Trump term.

In fairness, conservatives who were somewhat squeamish about President Trump’s characteristics made the same rationalizations during the 2016 election against Hillary Clinton. Ultimately, the election will come down to neither character nor intelligence and instead focus on who will better usher in America’s future.

Chinese Foreign Minister Accuses U.S. ‘Political Forces’ Of ‘Pushing Our Two Countries To The Brink Of A New Cold War’

Sun, 05/24/2020 - 23:31

On Sunday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi offered an apparent warning to politicians in the United States who “attack and slander China” over COVID-19, and are “costing … lives,” and “pushing our two countries to the brink of a new Cold War.”

“It’s most regrettable that while the coronavirus is still out there, a political virus is also spreading in the U.S., and jumping at any opportunity to attack and slander China,” Wang said. “Some politicians ignore the basic facts and make up countless lies and conspiracy theories concerning China.”

Wang then claimed that a “list of these lies has been compiled and debunked online,” and that the list will continue to grow.

“I call on the U.S. side to stop wasting precious time and stop costing people’s lives,” Wang said before claiming that the United States and China must cooperate and “share our experience.”

“Both China and the U.S. stand to gain from cooperation and lose from confrontation. This best captures what we have learned – positive and otherwise – from the past decades,” Wang stated. “Both sides should take this lesson to heart. China and the U.S. have different social systems, but this is a result of the different choices made by people, which we must respect.”

After noting that China and the United States have “many disagreements,” Wang said that our two countries must cooperate and that “China remains prepared to work with the U.S. in the spirit of no conflict or confrontation, mutual respect, and win-win cooperation, and build a relationship based on coordination, cooperation, and stability.”

Want then stated that “China will defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” and that the United States must “give up its wishful thinking of changing China or stopping 1.4 billion people’s historic march toward modernization.”

The diplomat then issued a troubling warning shot:

It has come to our attention that some political forces in the U.S. are taking China-U.S. relations hostage and pushing our two countries to the brink of a new Cold War. This dangerous attempt to turn back the will of history will undo the fruits of decades-long China-U.S. cooperation, dampen Americans own development prospects, and put world stability and prosperity in jeopardy.

This isn’t the first time a Chinese official has attempted to place blame on the United States for coronavirus-related “lies.”

In mid-March, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian claimed on Twitter that the United States Army might have brought the virus to China.

“When did patient zero begin in US? How many people are infected?” Zhao wrote. “What are the names of the hospitals? It might be US army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan. Be transparent! Make public your data! US owe us an explanation!”

China also attempted to silence a doctor who spoke out about the virus early on.

On December 30, Dr. Li Wenliang sent a message to a small group of people about the coronavirus. According to a report in The Lancet, four days after sending the message, Li “was summoned to the Public Security Bureau in Wuhan and made to sign a statement in which he was accused of making false statements that disturbed the public order.”

Li later died from COVID-19.

In a February 7 piece in The New York Times, it was reported that China ignored offers from the CDC for “more than a month” to “send a team of experts” in to help with the coronavirus outbreak.

“Current and former public health officials and diplomats” reportedly told The New York Times that they believed “the reluctance [came] from China’s top leaders, who do not want the world to think they need outside help.”

In early-April, Bloomberg reported that according to three anonymous U.S. officials, “the U.S. intelligence community concluded in a classified report to the White House” that China had “intentionally” been undercounting their COVID-19 case totals and deaths.

The above are just several examples from a larger pattern of misdirection and obfuscation from China regarding COVID-19. These latest remarks from Wang appear to be just one more attempt to spin the ball and intimidate the United States.

Arkansas Gov: ‘We Have To Manage The Risk’ With COVID-19, Like ‘Wearing A Seatbelt’ While Driving

Sun, 05/24/2020 - 22:15

On Sunday, Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson appeared on “Fox News Sunday” with host Chris Wallace to discuss his state’s response to the ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

“You never issued a stay-at-home order in your state, and now, you’ve officially reopened all your stores, restaurants, movie theaters, and gyms, although at reduced capacity,” Wallace said. “Governor, what’s your thinking about all that?”

Hutchinson replied:

Well, my thinking is that we have to manage the risk. We take the virus very seriously. It’s a risk, it causes death, but you can’t cloister yourself in home. That is just contrary to the American spirit.

“And we have to discipline ourselves. We have to manage the risk. I make the comparison with – you know, you can be in an automobile and it’s very risky, but you manage the risk by wearing a seat belt,” the governor added. “At first, everyone resisted wearing a seat belt and said, well, that’s a matter of freedom. Well, it is, but it’s also a matter of safety.”

Hutchinson continued, saying that they are “managing the risk,” and that the state has fewer than 100 hospitalizations from the virus.

“It doesn’t diminish the seriousness in which we take it, but we have to manage the risk, grow our economy. We have to come back, and not just in Arkansas, but nationally, because this virus is deadly, but it’s going to be with us a while,” the governor said.

Wallace followed up by asking Hutchinson about risk management, saying that the state of Arkansas has “not followed the White House guidelines, which called for a steady decline for two weeks in the number of new cases in a state before they could go to each new phase.”

The host then showed a chart in which the number of COVID-19 cases in Arkansas bobs “up and down like the stock market,” noting that the “highest single day of cases” occurred on Thursday when there were 455.

“Which raises the question, do you really have the virus under control in Arkansas?” Wallace asked.

Hutchinson responded by pointing out that the state reopened on the decline, and that another criteria for reopening is a “decline in … positivity rate.”

“If you look at our positivity rate, 10% is the national standard you try to get to. We’ve expanded testing in Arkansas, but even with that, our positivity rate has been running lower than 5% of all of our tests,” Hutchinson said.

And so, you manage the risk by increasing the testing. You look at it as to whether the fact that we’ve lifted restrictions is one of the reasons for the increased number of cases, and our answer is, we don’t see a connection there. We see it because we’re testing more and we’re following and tracing where those are coming from, and they’re not coming from the fact that we’ve lifted some of the restrictions.

For example, many of them come from the food supply industry, which is an essential service [that] nobody closes down anyway, and we can’t. And so, you’ve got to manage the risk, and we did, we believe comfortable in terms of meeting the criteria to go to phase one.

When asked about a peak in cases, and how he would respond given his press briefing on Saturday during which he spoke about a high school “swim party” where the virus allegedly spread, Hutchinson said it’s about “transparency” and “self-discipline.”

“It’s a matter of self-discipline, and that’s why I talked about the swim party and the fact that you can pass the virus at a swim party,” the governor replied. “I don’t think we’re going to say you can’t invite anybody over to a pool in the backyard of your home. I think you have to exercise discipline and make sure you have the right constraints in place. And so, it’s education.”

Hutchinson added that part of the “reason for the spike” is “because we have greater testing.”

“We got to think about next fall. Where are we going to be? We’re not going to be cloistered in our home. That’s contrary to the American spirit. We’ve got to manage the risk next fall by the infrastructure that we’re building now,” the governor concluded.
