BOMBSHELL REPORT: "Whistleblower" Eric Ciaramella Directly Linked with Biden Effort to Fire Ukraine Prosecutor

DougRoss - Mon, 11/11/2019 - 21:08
If you're not following Stephen McIntyre on Twitter (@ClimateAudit), please do so now. That's an order. Now that formalities are out of the way, I want to share some highlights from McIntyre's amazing research that ties the alleged "Whistleblower" Eric Ciaramella to Joe and Hunter Biden. The efforts of the "whistleblower" may be more motivated about covering up his own activities than anything else.

4/ be that as it may, there had been a sea change in US attitudes towards Shokin between Sep 25, 2015 and Feb 16, 2016. Biden's position is that Shokin's firing was over "concerns about corruption and ineptitude", "widely shared by Western allies".

— Stephen McIntyre (@ClimateAudit) November 10, 2019

6/ I've looked thru date-limited social media between Sep 2015 and Feb 2016 to try to more exactly delimit when Shokin became persona non grata to the US viceroys in Ukraine. It's an interesting exercise and still in progress.

— Stephen McIntyre (@ClimateAudit) November 10, 2019McIntyre writes (abridged from Twitter):

... during his six months of tenure as Prosecutor General, Shokin had overseen the establishment of an anti-corruption bureau (NABU) as requested by US/West. A director (Sytnyk) had been appointed in April, offices set up in May, investigative staff hired in August.

He had also established a committee for appointment of a Special Anti-Corruption Prosecutor (as requested) with appointment announced in November (Kholodnitsky).

After US-initiated regime change in Feb 2014, Shokin had been called out of retirement by new government to assist in reforming the Prosecutors' office, initially as a Deputy Prosecutor General, then appointed as Prosecutor General in Feb 2015.

To put this in perspective (and I don't wish to over-press coparison), Bill Barr was also a retired former official called out of retirement to reform a DOJ. Tensions inevitably arose between Barr and (for example) Andrew Weissman. Tensions also arose between Shokin and several ambitious younger Ukrainian prosecutors, especially Kasko, Sytnyk (who had been appointed head of NABU) and Sakveralidze, who had been imported from Biden's Georgia posse as a Deputy PG.

I don't pretend to be able to sort out the rights or wrongs of subsequent quarrels between Shokin and younger prosecutors. At a distance, it's impossible to sort out. I only observe that such quarrels arise when ambitious people are involved and, as shown below, US viceroys early on took the side of the prosecutors who were Weissman's age, not Barr's age.

As a preview, the influential Atlantic Council demanded a Robespierrian gutting of entire Ukrainian justice system, including the dismissal ("lustration") of all 10,000 judges. After all, <sarc> lustration of Saddam's army had worked out really well </sarc>.

20/ meanwhile, on Dec 9, NYT published a damning story entitled "Joe Biden, His Son and the Case Against a Ukrainian Oligarch" which contained surprisingly pointed criticisms

— Stephen McIntyre (@ClimateAudit) November 10, 2019

22/ but as of Jan 6, 2016, ambassador Pyatt looked back with satisfaction on 2015 as a "year of real reforms". Pyatt stated in 2015 (while Shokin Prosecutor General) that Ukraine "passed more reform legislation than in all the years prior".

— Stephen McIntyre (@ClimateAudit) November 10, 2019

24/ a Dec 22, 2015 German-language article by Leshchenko appears to provide an important clue.

— Stephen McIntyre (@ClimateAudit) November 10, 2019

26/ Leshchenko reported that he had visited Washington in the week prior (~Dec 3) to Biden's trip to Ukraine (Dec 9) and that Shokin's very name enraged "everyone" "in the Vice President's office" and the "leading think tanks" (Atlantic Council presumably).

— Stephen McIntyre (@ClimateAudit) November 10, 2019

28/ Leshchenko also reported that his Washington hosts also wanted a "full restructuring" of the prosecutor's office - this was presumably the "lustration" (dismissal) and replacement of the 10,000 existing prosecutors later demanded by Atlantic Council.

— Stephen McIntyre (@ClimateAudit) November 10, 2019

29/ on Jan 19, 2016, the three Weissman-age Ukrainian prosecutors (Sytnyk, Kholodnitsky and Sakveralidze) visited US officials in Washington without Shokin. Andriy Telizhenko of Ukr embassy reported that US officials asked Ukrainian prosecutors to dig up dirt on Manafort.

— Stephen McIntyre (@ClimateAudit) November 10, 2019

31/ but there's something additionally important about the Jan 19, 2016 meeting: the primary host was ...... Eric Ciaramella, much in the news recently.

— Stephen McIntyre (@ClimateAudit) November 10, 2019

34/ meanwhile, ANTAC continued to campaign for Shokin's removal, tagging ambassador Pyatt

— Stephen McIntyre (@ClimateAudit) November 10, 2019Restating this:

Alleged "whistleblower" (I think "leakerblower" is a better description) Eric Ciaramella was himself involved in Biden's original quid pro quo (or, as the Democrats like to call it, "extortion").

Further, he seems to have been involved in the original Russia-collusion hoax. Having hosted them, Ciaramella is probably who asked the Ukrainians to dig up dirt on Manafort!

The efforts of the "whistleblower" may be more motivated about covering up his own activities than anything else.

1/ Ciaramella was personally involved in issuing Biden demand that Shokin be fired as condition for IMF $1 billion. Ukr prosecutors informed of demand by US officials at Jan 19, 2016 meeting in Washington, one month before Shokin resignation.

The Anonymous Coup

DougRoss - Sat, 11/09/2019 - 01:28
By Julie Kelly

Impeachment, we are reminded by our betters, is a political process, not a criminal trial.

The president does not need to be accused of violating a specific law; evidence is whatever the House of Representatives wants it to be. The credibility of any witness, especially one wearing the uniform of the United States military, cannot be questioned. Ditto for the motives of any witness. Hearsay is Exhibit A; New York Times articles, Exhibit B.

But what truly animates the current impeachment crusade is the same ploy that’s been used against Donald Trump since 2016—a drumbeat of attacks from nameless, faceless partisans tasked with destroying Trump first as a candidate, now as the president. Anonymity gives cover to their political agenda under the guise of courage and “speaking truth to power.” Democratic lawmakers, the news media, and NeverTrump Republicans—unable to make a compelling case for Trump’s removal aside from Orange Man Bad—wield the incognito heroes’ charges as incontestable fact.

It is, for the most part, an anonymous coup.

The so-called “whistleblower” is just the latest mystery man to make damning accusations about Trump’s alleged malfeasance. After reports leaked about the “whistleblower’s” detailed report claiming the president threatened to withhold federal aid from Ukraine unless the country’s new president investigated the Bidens—an attempt to “solicit interference from a foreign country in the 2020 U.S. election,” he warned in the nine-page complaint—there were widespread calls for the patriot’s immediate testimony.

“We‘re in touch with counsel and look forward to the whistleblower’s testimony as soon as this week,” House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) tweeted on September 24. Several days later, Schiff disclosed that he was negotiating the terms of the “whistleblower’s” testimony before his committee.

But after the White House released a transcript of the phone call between Trump and Ukranian President Volodymyr Zelensky, the credibility of the “whistleblower” began to shred. News reports revealed that a Schiff staffer met with the unnamed accuser before he filed the official complaint in mid-August; contact Schiff initially denied. Trump and congressional Republicans started raising more questions about the author of the complaint and the suspect timeline of events.

Suddenly, the “whistleblower’s” testimony became unnecessary. Insisting that the call’s transcript proved that the “whistleblower” accusations were accurate, Schiff lost interest. Further, Schiff warned, the president and his supporters had placed the “whistleblower’s” life in danger. The media quickly took its cue and now refuses to name the “whistleblower,” even though journalist Paul Sperry last week confirmed his identity as Eric Ciaramella, a partisan operative with ties to former CIA Director John Brennan and former Vice President Joe Biden.

For more than three years, anonymous accounts of wrongdoing by Trump and his associates have been weaponized by the same news media now desperate to conceal the identity of the latest covert agent working to oust Trump. (The attorney for the “whistleblower” declared in January 2017, the “coup has started.”)

A roster of Trump-loathing operatives, protected by journalists as officials speaking on the “condition of anonymity,” have revealed classified information intended to get Team Trump and have made false allegations with impunity.

It began with unproven accusations compiled in a “dossier” authored by a “former British intelligence officer” that suggested the Trump campaign was in cahoots with the Kremlin to sway the outcome of the 2016 presidential election.

Unnamed “U.S. intelligence officials,” according to the first collusion bombshell written by Yahoo News’ Michael Isikoff on September 23, 2016, were looking at nefarious ties between Trump campaign aide Carter Page and Russia. Citing a “Western intelligence source,” Isikoff furnished specific details about Page’s alleged contacts with Putin associates. While Isikoff had no qualms reporting every little dossier-sourced detail about Carter Page, including what he later discovered to be untrue, Isikoff generously covered for his politically-motivated informants and refused to name names.

One week before Election Day, David Corn of Mother Jones juiced the Trump-Russia collusion tale with an article describing how a “veteran spy” had damning information about a plot between the Trump campaign and Russia to steal the election from Hlilary Clinton. The “former Western intelligence officer,” Corn reported, was working with the FBI. The agency expressed “shock and horror” upon reviewing the spy’s “report and other memos.”

When pressed by Corn (who knew the identity of the “spy” because he interviewed him personally), more unnamed bureaucrats vouched for his credibility. “[H]e has been a credible source with a proven record of providing reliable, sensitive, and important information to the US government,” according to a “senior U.S. government official.”

What the public later learned is that the “Western intelligence officer,” was Christopher Steele, a London-based consultant who had been hired by an opposition research shop in Washington D.C. to dig up dirt on the Trump campaign; Steele’s benefactors were the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee. The reports and memos were not legitimate intelligence or anything of the sort—it was campaign propaganda aimed to smear Team Trump. (Steele’s identity was concealed by the media until mid-January 2017.)

But the anonymous attacks didn’t stop after Election Day. The Washington Post published several articles planted by unnamed Obama holdovers in powerful government agencies to sabotage Trump’s presidency in its infancy. On January 12, 2017, Post reporter David Ignatius, working with a “senior U.S. government official,” revealed information about former National Security Advisor Mike Flynn’s classified phone conversations with the Russian ambassador.

The following month, the Post accused Flynn of discussing sanctions with the ambassador during the calls according to “nine current and former officials, who were in senior positions at multiple agencies at the time of the calls, [and] spoke on the condition of anonymity to discuss intelligence matters.” After days of brutal news coverage, Flynn resigned on February 14, 2017.

But the Post wasn’t done. In April 2017, the Post revealed that the FBI had a FISA warrant on Carter Page. “The officials spoke about the court order on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss details of a counterintelligence probe,” Devlin Barrett, Ellen Nakashima, and Adam Entous reported. That bombshell, according to the reporters, offered the “clearest evidence yet” that Jim Comey’s FBI was justified in investigating the Trump campaign.

What the reporters fail to note, time and again, is that discussing classified government information, such as intercepted phone calls between White House advisors and foreign officials or the existence of a FISA warrant, is a felony punishable by up to 10 years in prison.

There are too many more examples to list here—the ones mentioned are just the most egregious.

And there is more to come. A Warning, a new book authored by an anonymous “senior official,” is expected to be published in a few weeks. It’s the same unknown administrative insider who penned a lengthy September 2018 op-ed for the New York Times harshly criticizing the president and extolling the virtues of bureaucrats within the administration working to stop him. “The bigger concern is not what Mr. Trump has done to the presidency but rather what we as a nation have allowed him to do to us,” the nameless snitch warned. “We have sunk low with him and allowed our discourse to be stripped of civility.”

The title already is a bestseller and it won’t be available until November 19.

History is littered with bloodless coup attempts. But in the Trump era, enemy combatants not only are spared bloodshed, they don’t even have to give their names. That’s not courage or “speaking truth to power”—it’s calculated cowardice that would be out-of-bounds in any criminal trial, job setting, or personal relationship. Impeachment rules aside, most Americans will, and should, view this as patently unfair and a legitimate danger to our system of government now and in the future.

DEMOCRAT LOGIC: Vindman is a Hero but Gen. Flynn is a Traitor

DougRoss - Thu, 10/31/2019 - 23:05
By Daniel John Sobieski

The network coverage of the testimony of National Security Council staffer Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman as a “bombshell” and “damning” was laughable and dishonest, implying that his service to his country wearing its uniform made him a credible and unbiased witness without a political agenda. Particularly egregious were the comments of NBC News anchor Lester Holt, who equated wartime courage with peacetime candor. As Newsbusters noted:

After a report on the California wildfires, NBC Nightly News anchor Lester Holt told viewers “[t]here was dramatic testimony in the House impeachment investigation by a decorated war hero who works on the National Security Council and was among those who heard that phone call between President Trump and his Ukrainian counterpart.”

Except that others on the call between President Trump  and Ukrainian President, including those who were charged  with producing a transcript, don’t quite remember the call the way Vindman does. Certainly both participants on the call both said there was no pressure for Ukraine to “dig up dirt” on former Vice President Joe Biden. As for the quid pro quo, we now know the Ukrainians didn’t learn until August military aid had been delayed. The phone call was in July. It’s hard to have a quid pro quo when the party being extorted is not told about the alleged quo. So just what was Vindman’s problem with the call?

In his opening statement, Vindman says he came forward because he “did not think it was proper to demand that a foreign government investigate a U.S. citizen.”  Yet when pressed to explain where in the phone call transcript any demand was made, he lapsed into psychobabble about Ukrainian President Zelensky inferring a demand because of Trump’s more powerful position in the world. As Fox News reported:

Vindman voiced concerns about the investigation request during his interview Tuesday, but was also questioned over his statement that it was not “proper to demand that a foreign government investigate a U.S. citizen.”

A source told Fox News that Vindman struggled for several minutes when asked to point to Trump’s language in the transcript that backed up the claim that it was a demand. Vindman later stated that Trump was the party with the most power, or "superior," so the "whole thing [call] was a demand asking for a favor."

So why did Zelensky say he felt no pressure? Vindman’s testimony comes close to being as much of a fable about the call as was House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff’s opening statement before his committee making up what he claimed Trump meant and what Zelensky understood.

Certainly 33-year military veteran Lt. Gen. Michael Flynn was not treated with the same deference when he became the focus of the deep state coup attempting to keep Donald Trump out of the White House. He served his country with genuine honor and distinction  He served both in Iraq and Afghanistan both for the Central Command and the Joint Special Operations Command which included units like Seal Team 6.  President Obama appointed him director of the Defense Intelligence Agency, where he served until he fell out of favor for his criticism of President Obama precipitously withdrawing from Iraq, which created a vacuum the Islamic State rose to fill, with Obama doing nothing as he watched it grow except dismiss it as the “JV team.”

Flynn’s attorney, Sidney Powell, has filed a motion to dismiss the charges against him based on indications that the FBI altered his 302s, essentially written reports based on witness interviews, to make him look guilty, and leaking information on Flynn’s calls to the Washington Post. As reported by RedState:

Powell alleges a set-up of Flynn including that the FBI 302s related to Flynn were edited. A 302 is the form the FBI uses to reflect what a witness says during an interview. Powell’s filing also suggests that Office of Net Assessment’s James Baker illegally leaked the transcripts of Flynn’s calls to David Ignatius of the Washington Post. And Powell is specifically looking for the phone records of James Clapper to see about his contacts with Ignatius, including that he essentially told Ignatius to “take the kill shot on Flynn.”

Powell’s brief alleges that Flynn was essentially railroaded and set up and that the prosecution has withheld exculpatory evidence that should have gotten the case thrown out a long time ago.  As the Federalist reports:

…Powell’s 37-page brief pivots between showcasing the prosecution’s penchant for withholding evidence and exposing significant new evidence the defense team uncovered that establishes a concerted effort to entrap Flynn. Along the way, Powell drops half-a-dozen problems with Flynn’s plea and an equal number of justifications for outright dismissal of the criminal charges against Flynn.

What is most striking, though, is the timeline Powell pieced together from publicly reported text messages withheld from the defense team and excerpts from documents still sealed from public view. The sequence Powell lays out shows that a team of “high-ranking FBI officials orchestrated an ambush-interview of the new president’s National Security Advisor, not for the purpose of discovering any evidence of criminal activity --they already had tapes of all the relevant conversations about which they questioned Mr. Flynn --but for the purpose of trapping him into making statements they could allege as false.”

This is a genuine bombshell involving a plot to overturn an election and one does not have to resort to agenda-driven psychobabble to figure it out. Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn is a war hero who was loyal to the truth, his country and his President. When he is exonerated and asks where he can go to get his reputation back, I would suggest he start at the office of NBC’s Lester Holt.

The weekend raid that resulted in the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi was named after Kayla Mueller, an American aid worker killed in Syria in 2015 while being held captive by the sadistic ISIS leader. During his Sunday morning announcement from the White House, President Trump twice invoked Mueller’s name in addition to the names of other Americans murdered under the Islamic State’s ongoing reign of terror. According to reports from some of his escaped victims, Baghdadi took Mueller as his secret bride in 2013. “We were told Kayla was tortured, that she was the property of al-Baghdadi,” her parents said in an August 2015 interview.

Mueller was raped repeatedly by the ISIS caliph, then killed in February 2015 during a coalition strike on the compound where she was confined.

After the U.S. confirmed Mueller’s death, President Obama issued a statement. “ISIL is a hateful and abhorrent terrorist group whose actions stand in stark contrast to the spirit of people like Kayla. No matter how long it takes, the United States will find and bring to justice the terrorists who are responsible for Kayla’s captivity and death.”

Obama, however, did not bring those terrorists to justice; nearly five years later, it was Donald Trump who made good on that promise.

Misplaced Priorities

Mueller’s parents thanked the president for finally taking out their daughter’s tormentor.

“I still say Kayla should be here, and if Obama had been as decisive as President Trump, maybe she would have been,” Marsha Mueller, Kayla’s mother, told the Arizona Republic on Sunday. The former president, who famously referred to the al-Qaeda offshoot as a “JV team” in 2014 shortly before ISIS declared a caliphate, fumbled his response to its growing threat in the final years of his presidency. Obama admitted during the G7 meeting in June 2015 that his administration did not have a “complete strategy” to fight ISIS and that the details, including cooperation with our allies, were “not worked out.”

But in 2016, rather than successfully hunting down terrorists including Mueller’s captors, Obama and his top national security officials hunted down Trump campaign aides. Baghdadi’s death should be a reminder—an infuriating one at that—of how the Obama administration, particularly the CIA and FBI, squandered vital resources in service to a politically motivated investigation into Trump and his presidential campaign rather than focusing their efforts on the legitimate threats facing the country.

Trump alluded to that malfeasance in his press conference on Sunday. “When we use our intelligence correctly, what we can do is incredible,” Trump said while commending intelligence operatives who helped locate the ISIS madman. “When we waste our time with intelligence that hurts our country because we had poor leadership at the top, that’s not good.”

Trump, of course, was referring to former CIA Director John Brennan, former Director of National Intelligence James Clapper, and former FBI Director James Comey, the “Praetorian Guard” that laid the trap for Team Trump in 2016. As ISIS continued its murderous rampage in the Middle East and parts of Europe that year—including the Bastille Day truck attack in France that killed 86 people and wounded hundreds more—the most powerful intelligence professionals in the United States were surveilling Carter Page and George Papadopoulos.

The Situation in the Situation Room

High-level secret briefings in the White House Situation Room were not centered on potential attacks on the country but on Trump campaign volunteers allegedly in cahoots with the Kremlin to post mean memes on Facebook or release Hillary Clinton’s nonexistent emails in an attempt to “interfere in our election.” Rather than fulfilling Barack Obama’s pledge to Kayla Mueller’s family, the Obama Administration’s hierarchy, including the president, worked overtime to sabotage the Trump campaign, plant damaging stories in the news media, and plot to undermine his presidency in the event Trump won.

In the months leading up to Election Day, according to a lengthy article published in the Washington Post a few years ago, Obama’s national security chiefs met in the White House on a regular basis ostensibly to counteract Russia’s “election meddling.” The briefings, according to the Post, were so secret that the video feed from the Situation Room was cut off.

“In political terms, Russia’s interference was the crime of the century, an unprecedented and largely successful destabilizing attack on American democracy,” Post reporters and election collusion propagandists Greg Miller, Ellen Nakashima, and Adam Entous reported with much hyperbole in June 2017. Material sourced by Brennan was considered so sensitive that only a few people could handle the documents directly.

“To guard against leaks, subsequent meetings in the Situation Room followed the same protocols as planning sessions for the Osama bin Laden raid,” the Post reported.

Most notable are the people who attended those briefings: Brennan, Clapper, Comey, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, National Security Advisor Susan Rice, Homeland Security Advisor Lisa Monaco and Vice President Joe Biden. In other words, most of Barack Obama’s inner circle.

The objective of the meetings, according to the Post, was to gin up enough proof to support Brennan’s narrative—which he quickly cobbled together using sketchy evidence after the election—that Putin was scheming to make sure Donald Trump defeated Hillary Clinton.

“Despite the intelligence the CIA had produced, other agencies were slower to endorse a conclusion that Putin was personally directing the operation and wanted to help Trump,” the Post revealed. Brennan later told Congress that his team collected intelligence about “U.S. persons” associated with the Trump campaign and passed that information to the FBI; Comey, the story goes, then opened a counterintelligence probe into four Trump campaign aides in July 2016.

At the same time, Peter Strzok, the deputy assistant director for the FBI’s counterintelligence division which is supposed to protect Americans from a variety of foreign-based threats, kept himself busy by texting his girlfriend on an hourly basis about how they could get Trump. Tens of thousands of texts between Strzok and FBI lawyer Lisa Page between late 2015 and mid-2017 show that the pair was concerned not with how to prevent terrorists from attacking America but how to prevent Donald Trump from being president. The only mention of the name “Mueller” is Special Counsel Robert Mueller, not the young American woman kidnapped and tortured by one of the most wanted terrorists in the world.

And when the nation’s top intelligence professionals had a chance to meet with the incoming president, they did not brief him on the dangers facing the new administration. (He was looking at them.) Instead, they handed the president-elect a laughable intelligence community “assessment” that claimed Putin tried to hack the election to help Trump win. Comey then warned Trump that the Russians might have a recording of Trump peeing on Muscovite prostitutes in 2013, an outlandish accusation contained in the now-discredited Steele dossier.

For more than a year, the leaders entrusted to protect the country and administer justice on behalf of Americans victimized by terrorists instead used their awesome reach and influence against a domestic political rival. They illegally leaked classified information; spied on American citizens solely based on their political activity; deceived a secret court; circulated political dirt disguised as official intelligence; withheld information from Congress; ambushed Trump advisors; and repeatedly misled the American people about an imaginary threat posed by “Russian collusion.”

Enemies Within

That treachery did not stop after the top brass left government. Obama holdovers working within the intelligence community, such as Inspector General Michael Atkinson, continue to try to undermine the president. The House Intelligence Committee, led by U.S. Representative Adam Schiff (D-Calif.), who lied to the country for three years about Russian collusion, now is pursuing impeachment rather than authentic terrorist threats.

Rep. John Ratcliffe (R-Texas) said over the weekend that Schiff’s committee is abdicating its national security role in lieu of its impeachment crusade. “Unfortunately the intelligence committee that I serve on hasn’t been spending a whole lot of time on these issues, we’ve been caught up in Adam Schiff’s secret impeachment inquiry,” Ratcliffe told Fox Business News host Maria Bartiromo on Sunday. He said the committee’s last briefing on terrorism was held “well over a month ago.”

Comey, Clapper, and Brennan make outrageous accusations about Trump all with the imprimatur of their former offices. And as the partisan, insidious Robert Mueller investigation wore on for two years, every other national concern, including the war on terror, remained subordinate to that probe.

This is why the multiple inquiries underway at the Justice Department into the activities of Obama’s team in 2016 and early 2017 are so vital. The very people who have warned for nearly three years that Donald Trump poses a risk to national security are the people who actually have jeopardized our safety. Baghdadi’s delayed demise is just the latest example.

It's a news flash from 2017, but still.

Federal law makes it a crime to "knowingly and willfully" give "materially" false statements to Congress, even if unsworn -- which is not to be confused with the more general crime of perjury for lying under oath... The consequences for either crime are serious: one can face up to five years in prison. This, of course, assumes that a regular American citizen has equal protection under the law when compared to, say, a member of Congress. Like Adam Schiff, who read a fictional transcript into the Congressional Record because Orange Man Orange.

BREAKING: Inspector General says FISA Abuse Report Will Be "Lengthy" and Have "Few Redactions"

DougRoss - Fri, 10/25/2019 - 02:17
By Chuck Ross

The Justice Department inspector general’s report on possible FBI abuse of the foreign surveillance process is “lengthy,” and is likely to be made public with “few” redactions, the inspector general told lawmakers Thursday, according to a letter obtained by the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Michael Horowitz, the inspector general, informed Republicans and Democrats on four congressional committees with a status update on the report, which will detail an investigation into whether the FBI complied with laws and policies in applications for Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) warrants against Trump campaign adviser Carter Page.

Republicans have anticipated the report for months, with many speculating that it will show that the FBI misled the FISA court by relying heavily on the unverified Steele dossier to spy on Page.

Horowitz’s description of the report is likely to please Republicans, in that it suggested most of the information that the watchdog uncovered will be made public.

“Given that our draft report is lengthy, and concerns sensitive national security and law enforcement matters, we understood that it would take the Department and the FBI some time to work through and appropriately mark the entire report,” Horowitz said in the letter.

Horowitz, an Obama appointee, said the process is “nearing completion,” and that his office is working “constructively” with the Justice Department and FBI.

“The goal from my standpoint is to make as much of our report public as possible,” said Horowitz, adding that he anticipates the final report “will be released publicly with few redactions.”

Horowitz said after he receives final classification recommendations from DOJ and the FBI, his office will begin the normal process of reviewing the report for accuracy, and provide the agencies a chance to respond to allegations of wrongdoing.

The FBI obtained four FISA warrants against Page, with the first granted Oct. 21, 2016.

In the applications, the FBI cited information from Christopher Steele, a former British spy collecting dirt on the Trump campaign on behalf of the DNC and Clinton campaign.

Steele said the Trump campaign was part of a “well-developed conspiracy of cooperation” with the Kremlin in 2016. He also said Page was part of the conspiracy.

But the special counsel’s report undercut both allegations. Prosecutors said in their report that there was no evidence of a Trump-Russia conspiracy, and no evidence that Trump associates were found to be Russian assets.

Horowitz began his investigation March 28, 2018. He told lawmakers in a status update June 25 that his team had reviewed more than 1 million documents and interviewed more than 100 individuals as part of the probe. On Sept. 13, he submitted a draft of the report to the FBI and Justice Department for review.

Republicans had grown impatient in recent weeks about delays in the release of the report.

Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley tweeted Monday that he believed the so-called “deep state” had put a “deep six” on the report.
