Expect A Rise In Gun Sales After Deadly Shooting In Las Vegas

Newsy - Mon, 10/02/2017 - 23:29

Watch Video

Gun manufacturers' stocks rose Monday morning just hours after Las Vegas saw the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. history.

That's probably because of a pattern we've seen following mass shootings: Gun sales tend to surge in their aftermath.

Analysts believe the rush to purchase firearms is based on the fear that mass shootings will prompt stricter gun laws.

Gun sales spiked after the 9/11 attacks and after the shootings in San Bernardino, California, and Pulse nightclub in Orlando, Florida.

Former President Barack Obama called for more regulation of assault rifles following the 2012 Sandy Hook school shooting. After that, some retailers reportedly had a hard time keeping them on the shelves.

Mass shootings can also spark personal safety fears, which might boost gun sales. A 2013 Pew survey found self-protection is the most commonly cited reason for owning a gun.

Democrats in Congress, including House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, have renewed their calls to pass stricter gun control laws in the wake of the shooting.

HuffPost makes walking around Las Vegas with a machine gun sound like a breeze

Twitchy - Mon, 10/02/2017 - 23:27

If gun control advocates are really going to capitalize on Sunday’s mass shooting in Las Vegas, they need to make it sound as if it takes little to no effort to pull of the horrific killing spree that left at least 58 dead.

According to the Wall Street Journal and other reports, suspect Stephen Paddock did have fully automatic weapons in his hotel room, as well as an arsenal that included the makings of explosives explosives.

19 guns found in home w/ explosives & "electronic devices" -16 guns in hotel room -thousands of rounds of ammo -ammonium nitrate in car (used for explosives) -& swat team going to northern NV home. This guy appeared to be planning for a long time

— Bret Baier (@BretBaier) October 2, 2017

Word that the gunman had at least one full-auto weapon inspired a chorus of people to exclaim that machine guns should be illegal. Sean Davis in The Federalist makes it clear that there are plenty of laws on the books already.

Most journalists are clueless when it comes to America's gun laws. Here are the actual facts on gun regulation.

— Sean Davis (@seanmdav) October 2, 2017

Davis writes:

Reports, like those from ABC reporter Terry Moran, that machine guns are perfectly legal in Nevada and other states are highly misleading. Federal law, after all, pre-empts state law. In fact, under Nevada state law, NFA items are only legal if they have been legally obtained and registered under federal law. You can’t just waltz into the state with an unregistered machine gun and expect to walk around scot-free. This is the case in all states which allow possession of NFA items. Legal federal ownership is a prerequisite in every case. If the NFA item is not owned, registered, and stamped in compliance with federal laws and regulations, then the item is illegal under state law.

In other words, Huffington Post editor-in-chief Lydia Polgreen makes walking around with a machine gun sound a lot easier than it really is. You know how they are out there in the Wild West — guns everywhere, ’cause that’s the way they like it.

It's completely legal to walk around Las Vegas with a machine gun

— Lydia Polgreen (@lpolgreen) October 2, 2017

No, it's not.

— Sean Davis (@seanmdav) October 2, 2017

Narrator: it is not

— Ben McDonald (@Bmac0507) October 2, 2017

Anyone not already converted knows this is a lie.

Then perhaps you should avoid tweeting harebrained falsehoods like this:

In case you're the type that reads the news still, here is a PSA: this headline is a flat lie.

You're an idiot. Machine guns are illegal for common citizens everywhere in the U.S.

— Yva B (@Frankly_Yva) October 2, 2017

Hi Lydia,
I invite you to read up on the federal regulations on owning an automatic weapon and then amend your article.

— Pepe's Imam (@dindunuffinyt) October 2, 2017

It's completely irresponsible to say that, and it's false, and you have no idea what you're talking about.

— MikeCHabsFan (@MikeCHabsFan) October 2, 2017

Sad you would prompt #FakeNews. NV imposes no additional laws. In 1986, private possession of machine guns was made illegal on Fed level.

— Catherine (@catherineid3) October 2, 2017

There’s that little detail of federal law trumping state law. Good thing the experts at HuffPost are here to set us straight.

Automatic rifles have been effectively banned for decades. (Yes, pre-1986 weapons available through heavily regulated process.)

— Kevin D. Williamson (@KevinNR) October 2, 2017

sorry meant to say semi-auto!

Supreme Court back in session amid rumors Justice Kennedy could retire

Hot Air - Mon, 10/02/2017 - 23:21

The Supreme Court is back at work starting today and there is ongoing speculation that Justice Anthony Kennedy, now 81, could retire after this term. Saturday Fox News reported on the months of rumors:

Sources close to Justice Anthony Kennedy say he has been seriously considering retirement and may not stay on the bench for Trump’s entire first term. Rumors were at a blustery pitch that he would step down last June, but the new term begins with the 81-year-old justice on board, his unique power base intact.

His influence as the court’s “swing” member — the deciding vote on a range of high-profile cases from gay marriage to immigration to abortion — has left his seat coveted by those on the right and left. Replacing him would launch an epic political fight, and could prove a boost to the Trump presidency itself.

CNN adds to that report today: “since last winter, sources have told CNN that Kennedy, 81, is considering retirement, although no one is sure when.” The story goes on to say progressives are concerned that date may be approaching and thinking about what it would mean for progressive priorities, especially Roe v. Wade:

“Justice Kennedy is one of the last things standing between progressive values rooted in the Constitution and the wrecking ball that is this erratic administration,” [Center for American Progress’ Michele] Jawando added. “Another Trump nominee would surely undo Kennedy’s powerful legacy that includes protecting abortion rights and recognizing marriage equality for same-sex couples. ”

While Kennedy has voted with conservatives on issues such as campaign finance, gun rights and voting rights, he’s delivered victories for liberals on issues concerning LGBT rights, abortion restrictions and affirmative action. The court has five Republican-appointed and four Democrat-appointed justices.

“I personally have no doubt that if Justice Kennedy or Justice Ginsburg or Justice Breyer is replaced by President Trump, there will be five votes to overrule Roe v. Wade and Roe v. Wade will be overruled,” constitutional scholar Erwin Chemerinsky said at an event hosted by Irvine School of Law last summer.

Last November, I wrote a post speculating that Roe could be overturned if Kennedy, Ginsburg or Breyer were to retire during Trump’s first term. That seems even more possible now that Justice Gorsuch is on the court and probably a safe vote against Roe. If Kennedy retires after this term (sometime next summer) it will set up the biggest congressional battle in recent years, with progressives doing anything and everything they can to prevent a vote until after the 2018 midterm elections. The map in those elections is heavily stacked against Democrats but no doubt they would prefer to enter the election with the survival of Roe as an issue.

KNEW IT! Did NBC News ‘journo’ mean to bust biased MSM with this DAMNING complaint?

Twitchy - Mon, 10/02/2017 - 22:58

Well, it’s all out in the open now. Thanks to NBC News global editor Cal Perry for confirming what we’ve been saying for ages: The MSM is here to push an agenda.

Been a journo for a while now. It has become impossible to report just, "facts" about gun violence. The fact is America needs gun control.

— Cal Perry (@CalNBC) October 2, 2017

That’s a “fact,” is it?

Actually as a "journalist" you should realize that's actually an opinion

— EricInfoTech (@EricInfoTech) October 2, 2017

This is not how facts work

— Guy Benson (@guypbenson) October 2, 2017

No, it’s not. But hey, at least Perry is openly admitting his bias. That’s a lot more than most of his colleagues can say.

Every editor and reporter should be so forthcoming about their opinions. (While preferably clearer on what a "fact" is.)

— Tim Carney (@TPCarney) October 2, 2017

Of course, now that Perry’s come so clean, is it really fair for him to call himself a fact-focused “journo”?

— Cali Hustle and Flow (@BItesThenBarks) October 2, 2017

You want a gun ban. We already have gun control.

Then just admit you can’t do your job and pick a different profession or at least focus on different topics.

Hasn't the past eighteen months taught you anything?

Roman Polanski finally admits to child rape but says, “It’s over”

Hot Air - Mon, 10/02/2017 - 22:41

For reasons which escape me in the 21st century when talking about relations with countries which are supposed to be our allies, noted pedophile and convicted child rapist Roman Polanski is giving interviews from the Zurich Film Festival rather than the bottom level of some dank dungeon. Usually, when the “uncomfortable” subject of his monstrous crimes against children are brought up, the director waves questions off and doesn’t comment.

On this occasion, however, as his attorneys press his case to be allowed to return to the United States without having to go to jail, he actually responded to a reporter. His answer once again demonstrates his complete lack of remorse and sense of entitlement, as if a person of his stature in the entertainment industry should not be held accountable under the law. (, emphasis added)

Speaking at the Zurich Film Festival, Roman Polanski made a rare comment on the rape conviction that caused him to flee the United States. Polanski was arrested and charged with raping Samantha Geimer, who was 13 at the time, in 1977. In a plea bargain, the director pleaded guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor, but fled to Paris when he heard the judge was considering giving him 50 years in prison.

“As you know, Samantha Geimer has been asking for over 30 years for this thing to end. But, I’m sorry the judges who dealt with it the last 40 years were corrupted, one covering for the other … maybe one of them will (eventually) stop doing it,” he said, according to The Hollywood Reporter. “As far as what I did: It’s over. I pleaded guilty. I went to jail. I came back to the United States to do it, people forget about that, or don’t even know. I then was locked up here (in Zurich) after this festival. So in the sum, I did about 4 or 5 times than what was promised to me,” Polanksi said.

You’ll note that the only time the words ‘I’m sorry’ escape the monster’s lips are when he’s talking about the idea that the judges handling the trial are “corrupt” or something. As to what he did to Samantha Geimer in 1977? (Not to mention other little girls, one of which recently came forward to accuse him.) There’s no apology there. Just a statement that he feels his lawyers pencil whipped that problem into the trash when it originally happened and… it’s over.

Over? Oh no, Roman. Allow me to assure you that this isn’t over. It’s not over by a damn site. Not if we have anything to say about it.

The child molester wants to hang his perverted hat on the fact that Samantha Geimer is a good Christian soul who has heeded the words of the Lord and forgiven the monster who attacked her. Good for her. That’s more than even some of the most godly in our society could muster. But that’s also not how the legal system works.

In case there are any of you left who somehow never caught wind of the original story, let us not allow Polanski, the media, or anyone else to whitewash the details. In 1977 Samantha Geimer was a 13 year old child who, having been lured by the promise of having some photos taken and the possibility of getting to work as a model dangled before her, was lured into Polanski’s presence. He gave her alcohol and then slipped her some drugs. In her incapacitated state he then proceeded to rape and sodomize her. And when he was done he essentially kicked her to the curb like so much rubbish.

Ms. Geimer may have forgiven you, Roman, but the rest of the world with any sense of right and wrong has not. And if there is any justice in this life, when you eventually go to your “reward” it will be in a lake of fire. But before that time comes we’d like one last shot at you in a court of law. If you had an ounce of decency anywhere in your depraved excuse for a soul you would come back to California on your own with no strings attached and stand before the bar of justice.

Of course, I don’t expect that to happen, so I sincerely hope that our respective governments can come to some sort of arrangement where you are extradited back here by force. At this point I’d happily trade Fethullah Gulen for you. Perhaps your home country could get something good from Turkey for him in return.

JFK Critics Unite – Call on CIA to Release All Pertinent Classified Files

GatewayPundit - Mon, 10/02/2017 - 22:39

Roger Stone and Gerald Posner, two New York Times bestselling authors who are polar opposites about who killed JFK, joined in urging Donald Trump to release all the remaining classified files on Kennedy’s assassination.

About 3,100 files are still sealed in the National Archives. Under the 1992 JFK Records Act, the Archives have until October 26 to decide which of those files to publicly disclose.

Some of the classified documents include a CIA personality study of Oswald, top-secret testimony of former CIA officers to congressional committees, transcripts of interrogations with Soviet defector and Oswald handler Yuri Nosenko, letters about the case from J. Edgar Hoover and Jackie Kennedy, the CIA file on Jack Wasserman, the attorney for New Orleans mob boss Carlos Marcello, and the operational file of E. Howard Hunt, career spy and Watergate burglar.

Roger Stone, in his bestselling 2013 The Man Who Killed Kennedy: The Case Against LBJ, set forth the case that LBJ was the mastermind of plot that included the CIA, the Mob and Big Texas Oil to kill Kennedy.

Gerald Posner, in his 1993 bestselling finalist for the Pulitzer for History, Case Closed: Lee Harvey Oswald and the Assassination of JFK, concluded that the Warren Commission conclusions are correct and Oswald acting alone had killed Kennedy.

While they might not agree on who killed Kennedy, Stone and Posner are longstanding advocates for the release of all the government files on the assassination.

“These files should have been released long ago,” says Posner. “The government does this all the time, over classified documents and then holds on to them for decades under the guise of ‘national security.’ All the secrecy just feeds people’s suspicions that the government has something to hide and adds fuel to conspiracy theories.” Posner is convinced the case will still be closed when the last document is made public.

”I know CIA Director Pompeo is urging the President to delay release of these records for another 25 years,” said Stone. “They must reflect badly on the CIA even though virtually everyone involved is long dead.” Stone believes the evidence supporting the case in his book is still hidden somewhere in government files.

Both authors called on President Trump – who is empowered to make the final decision should the National Archives or CIA balk on releasing all the files – to opt for transparency.
